Chapter 39 - Ghost in the Network

The armored Mercedes G-Wagon cut through the biting Laurentian wind, its heavy-duty tires throwing up rooster tails of powdery snow as Daniel pushed the vehicle toward the Canadian border. In the back seat, the sudden silence felt heavier than the mountain rock they had just escaped. Elena sat rigidly, her eyes fixed on the frost-patterned glass, while Ethan’s fingers moved across the ruggedized military laptop. The green luminescence cast sharp shadows across the boy’s exhausted face.
"Dad, look at this," Ethan whispered, his voice cracking with a mixture of adrenaline and awe. "The Janus core database isn't just syncing—it’s cascading. Every mirror server we set up across Europe and Asia is picking up the traffic. We’ve triggered a dead-man’s switch for the entire shadow board."
Daniel glanced into the rearview mirror, his piercing blue eyes locking onto Elena’s hollow expression. "Care to explain what your former colleagues are going to find when they open those files, Elena? Or are we going to wait until we cross the border for you to find your voice?"
May you like
Elena slowly turned her head, a dry, bitter smile touching her lips. "You think you've won, Daniel? You think exposing the names and offshore ledgers is going to bring down a system that has spent fifty years embedding itself into the military-industrial complex? Those men don't govern from office buildings. They own the supply chains, the satellite constellations, and the political dynasties. You’ve just kicked a hornet's nest with a steel pipe."
"Then we’ll burn the nest down one wasp at a time," Marcus grunted from the passenger seat, casually racking the slide of his sidearm as he watched the snowy horizon behind them. "Better than waiting in a pine box."
