Chapter 28 - The Gathering Storm

Three months later, the shadows of the European underworld whispered of a phantom.

In a secluded, dimly lit penthouse overlooking the glittering, rain-slicked skyline of Zurich, Elena Carter sat at a massive mahogany desk, reviewing the daily transaction logs of the newly consolidated Janus financial network. The global markets bent to her whim; international intelligence agencies had quietly closed their files, officially declaring the syndicate dismantled; and the board of directors she had spent a decade engineering now answered exclusively to her command.

She raised a crystal glass of aged scotch to her lips, taking a slow, appreciative sip as she stared out at the sprawling city lights below. She had won. The empire was hers, absolute and unchallenged.

A soft, electronic chime chimed from the secure terminal on the corner of her desk.

Elena frowned, placing her glass down and reaching over to tap the receiver key. "Report," she commanded, her voice smooth and composed.

Static hissed through the speaker for three agonizing seconds. Then, a low, distorted voice echoed from the audio feed—carrying a cadence that made Elena’s blood run instantly, paralyzingly cold.

"Check the courtyard, Elena," the voice whispered.

Elena spun around in her executive chair, her eyes widening in sudden, unadulterated panic. She rushed to the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the penthouse, looking down twelve stories toward the private cobblestone courtyard below.

Parked directly in the center of the secure, guarded plaza was a heavy, matte-black G-Wagon.

The driver's door swung open slowly. A figure stepped out into the pouring rain, pulling back the hood of a heavy tactical jacket to reveal the sharp, unyielding glare of Daniel Carter. Standing beside him, leaning casually against the fender with a submachine gun resting across his shoulder, was Marcus. And stepping out from the rear passenger door, holding a small, ruggedized military laptop that glowed with a bright, pulsing green interface, was a twelve-year-old boy with dark hair and eyes carved from absolute stone.

Elena’s breath caught in her throat. The glass in her hand slipped from her fingers, shattering into a thousand sparkling shards across the polished marble floor.

The secure comm-device on her desk crackled once more before going dead.

Upstairs, the heavy oak doors of the penthouse private elevator chimed with a single, resonant ding.
