Chapter 25 - The Ghost Protocol

The crimson glare of the emergency lights bathed the yacht’s hallway in a hellish, pulsating glow. Daniel held Elena pinned against the mahogany paneling, his muscles locked tight, his eyes darting toward the primary communications hub at the end of the corridor.

"What did you just do?" Daniel demanded, pressing the barrel of his rifle fractionally harder against her collarbone.

Elena let out a low, breathy laugh, completely unfazed by the weapon at her throat. "I didn't do anything, Daniel. I simply stopped fighting the current. You thought you were hunting me down to shut me out. In reality, you just delivered the final authentication node straight to my doorstep."

Before Daniel could process her words, the secure comm-device strapped to his tactical vest crackled to life with a burst of frantic static.

"Dad! Dad, do you copy?" Ethan’s voice cut through the speaker, frantic, sharp, and laced with a terror Daniel had never heard from his son before.

Daniel released his grip on Elena, stumbling back half a step as he keyed the receiver on his vest. "Ethan! I copy. Talk to me—what's happening on your end?"

"The local server relays at the coastal van just fried!" Ethan shouted over a deafening background roar of alarms and electrical sizzling. "It wasn't a firewall block, Dad—it was a trap! The moment we initiated the quarantine virus, it acted as a bi-directional handshake. The Janus network just used our IP address to trace our exact coordinates in the Laurentians!"

A cold spike of adrenaline pierced Daniel’s heart. "Where are they hitting you?"

"They're not sending mercs," Ethan’s voice was breaking now, the cool, detached maturity evaporating to reveal a terrified twelve-year-old boy. "They just triggered an automated orbital strike relay. The tactical drones... they're locking onto our GPS coordinates right now. We have less than ninety seconds before the safehouse is leveled!"

Daniel spun around to face Elena, his face twisted in a mask of murderous fury. "Call them off! Right now, or I swear to God I will put a bullet through your skull!"

Elena slowly smoothed out the front of her midnight-blue evening gown, stepping back into the center of the corridor with absolute, chilling composure. She looked at Daniel with eyes devoid of any lingering warmth or shared history.

"There is no call button, Daniel," Elena said softly. "The system operates autonomously now. The old world is burning down to the studs. And if you want to save your son... you'd better start running."

With a swift, fluid motion, Elena spun on her heel and dashed down the auxiliary service corridor toward the reinforced panic rooms in the bow of the yacht.

Daniel didn't chase her. Every instinct screaming in his chest, he turned and sprinted toward the stern exit, vaulting over the mahogany railing and diving headfirst into the freezing black waters of the Atlantic toward the waiting RHIB.
