Chapter 9 - The Price of Loyalty

"Marcus!" Daniel roared, diving across the wet gravel and dragging his most trusted enforcer behind the steel rib of a cargo container just as another round punched a smoking crater into the asphalt where Marcus had been standing a second before.
Blood bubbled thickly between Marcus’s fingers as he clutched his chest, his breath coming in short, rattling gasps. "Boss... sector... sector four crane... the sniper’s got the high ground..."
"Save your breath," Daniel said, his voice hard, though his eyes betrayed a flicker of raw, suppressed agony. He ripped open his tactical med-kit, tearing away the ballistic fabric to expose the wound. The bullet had caught the edge of the ceramic plate, but the kinetic shock and shrapnel had torn deep. "Marcus, look at me. You're not checking out today. Do you hear me?"
"I... I missed a spot back in the tunnel," Marcus managed a weak, blood-stained grin, his eyelids fluttering. "Should've checked the thermal feeds closer..."
Ethan scrambled over to them, ignoring the crack of gunfire echoing off the metal containers around them. His face was pale, his hands trembling slightly, but his eyes were sharp. He looked at the wound, then up at Daniel. "Dad, the sniper on the crane is using a custom-calibrated Barrett .50. That’s not a standard syndicate piece. That's military grade. The same model used by the private security firm Vance hired last month."
"I know," Daniel said coldly. He pulled his combat knife from his belt and handed it to Ethan. "Take Lily, get behind the generator housing by the wharf. Stay low."
"I'm not leaving you," Ethan said, his voice dropping an octave, echoing Daniel's own stubborn tone. "If we run, they pick us off one by one in the open. We have to blind them."
Before Daniel could argue, Lily stepped up beside Ethan, holding her leather case. Her face was calm with an eerie, terrifying composure. "They're tracking us through the encrypted signal on my father’s micro-film case," she said softly. "The casing has an active RFID booster. As long as I'm holding it, they know exactly where we are."
Daniel looked at the girl, realizing the brutal truth of her words. The enemy wasn't just tracking their faces or their cars; they were tracking the very evidence they were trying to protect.
"Give me the case," Daniel said.
Lily hesitated for only a fraction of a second before handing the battered leather box over.
Daniel didn't hesitate. He pulled a live incendiary grenade from his tactical vest, pulled the pin with his teeth, jammed it beneath the latch of the leather case, and tossed the rigged box fifty yards out into the open asphalt of the marine yard, right beneath the arc of a towering floodlight.
"Cover your ears!" Daniel yelled, pulling Ethan and Lily down flat against the concrete beside Marcus.
Three seconds later, a blinding flash of magnesium white obliterated the shadows of the marine yard, accompanied by a deafening roar that shook the docks to their foundations. The micro-film case—along with the RFID booster and half the pavement around it—vaporized into a cloud of white-hot fire and pulverized concrete.
Through the smoke, the sniper on the crane scope suddenly lost his tracking signal. The red laser dot vanished from the surrounding walls.

"Now," Daniel whispered, his eyes blazing with cold fury as he shouldered his assault rifle. "We hunt."
