Chapter 34 - The Safehouse in the Pines

Twelve hours later, the Gulfstream touched down on a hidden, snow-dusted airstrip tucked deep within the rugged wilderness of the Canadian Shield—the very region where the mobile comms van had been vaporized three months prior.

The biting winter wind howled through the ancient pine trees as Daniel led Elena down the mobile staircase, stepping directly into the frozen mud and slush. Standing at the edge of the tree line was a heavily fortified, subterranean bunker entrance disguised as an old logging station.

"Recognize the scenery, Elena?" Daniel asked quietly as Marcus escorted her forward through the freezing gale.

Elena looked around, her eyes widening slightly as she took in the scorched earth visible fifty yards away—the exact crater where she had tried to erase her family from the map. A shiver that had nothing to do with the Canadian winter ran down her spine.

"You brought me back to the grave," Elena whispered, her voice losing its edge of defiance.

"Not a grave," Ethan corrected, walking past her with the military laptop clutched tightly in his hands. "A courtroom."

They descended a massive set of reinforced concrete stairs into a sprawling, subterranean command center illuminated by rows of glowing blue server racks and tactical monitors. This wasn't just a hideout; it was a fully operational command hub built from the ground up to dismantle what remained of the Janus syndicate piece by piece.

Daniel seated Elena in a heavy steel interrogation chair bolted directly into the concrete floor, finally releasing her wrists from the zip-ties. She rubbed her sore arms, her eyes scanning the array of monitors displaying live feeds from financial institutions across Zurich, New York, and Hong Kong.

"The board thinks you're dead, Elena," Daniel said, pulling up a chair and sitting directly opposite her. "They think the orbital strike wiped out the leadership dispute entirely. Which means they're currently tearing each other apart trying to carve up your empire."

Elena let out a bitter, humorless laugh, shaking her head. "You think destroying my network stops the machine? The syndicate isn't a corporation, Daniel. It's an ideology. Even if you lock me away, someone else will step into the vacuum."

"Let them," Daniel replied, his voice dropping into a low, lethal whisper. "Because unlike you, I'm not playing to control the board anymore. I'm clearing the table."
