Chapter 31 - Shadows on the Runway

Dawn broke over Zurich with a cold, pale light that offered no warmth to the rain-slicked tarmac of a private airfield on the outskirts of the city. A sleek, matte-black Gulfstream G650 sat idling on the runway, its twin engines whining a high-pitched mechanical song against the wind.
Marcus marched Elena down the steel mobile staircase, her wrists bound securely with heavy-duty tactical zip-ties. She wore her composure like a tattered cloak, her chin held high, though her eyes darted constantly toward the perimeter fences where Swiss federal police units were beginning to assemble.
"You're making a catastrophic mistake, Daniel," Elena called out over the roar of the jet wash as Daniel followed a few paces behind, carrying the scorched remnants of the military laptop. "The moment we land in the States, jurisdictional loops will swallow this whole case. You can't hold me outside the wire forever."
Daniel didn't break his stride. He looked at her with an absolute, chilling indifference that cut deeper than any threat.
"We're not going to the States," Daniel replied smoothly, motioning for Marcus to push her toward the cabin hatch. "We're heading to a dark-site facility off the coast of Nova Scotia. Right near where you tried to vaporize my son."

Ethan climbed up the stairs unassisted, the glowing green interface of the primary tactical console reflecting in his dark eyes. He plugged a secondary diagnostic drive into the aircraft’s avionics network, seamlessly routing the flight path away from civilian radar corridors.
As the heavy cabin door sealed shut with a pressurized hiss, the Gulfstream surged forward, tearing down the wet runway and lifting violently into the gray European sky. They were airborne, heading into a storm of their own making.
