Chapter 1 - The Blackout in the Basin

The live security feed on my laptop flickered twice before stabilizing into a crisp, high-definition monochrome view of my Lake Tahoe living room. Three hundred miles away in San Diego, the hum of the base quarters faded into the background as I watched my family settle into my property like conquering heroes.
Dad was standing by the stone fireplace, pointing authoritatively toward the mantel where he intended to hang a family portrait, while Olivia directed David on where to drop the heavy cardboard boxes. The sudden plunge into darkness—triggered remotely by my encrypted override protocol—froze them in place.
On screen, Dad stumbled backward against the sofa, letting out a sharp curse as he groped blindly for a wall switch that no longer carried current.
“What kind of cheap wiring is this?!” Dad roared, his voice echoing through the open-plan room. “Olivia, where did you put the flashlights?”
“I didn't bring any flashlights, Dad! Why did the power just die?” Olivia snapped back, dropping a stack of kitchen linens onto the floor in frustration. “David, go check the breaker panel in the garage!”

David hurried toward the hallway, muttering under his breath, completely unaware that the main breaker wasn't tripped—it had been digitally locked and sealed under a secondary federal utility covenant tied to my naval logistics clearance.
I leaned back in my chair, sipping a cup of cold black coffee, watching them flail in the darkness they had so eagerly rushed to claim.
