Chapter 64 - The Server Bay Ambush

I located the heavy vertical ladder leading up to the main server bay and climbed upward, step by measured step, keeping my weapon raised and my senses razor-sharp.

Through the reinforced wire-glass window of the server bay door, I could see a chaotic scene. Three masked mercenaries in heavy tactical gear were frantically wrenching a massive, glowing quantum storage rack from its bulkhead mountings, while a frantic-looking technician hammered away at a ruggedized terminal.

And standing right behind them, supervising the extraction with cold, calculated precision, was a face from our past we thought we had buried in Geneva: Commander Heinrich Voss, a former Aegis logistics officer who had managed to slip through the dragnet during the Swiss vault raid.

“Faster!” Voss snapped in his sharp, accented voice, slamming his hand onto the metal table. “If we don't secure those cores before the naval task force intercepts our coordinates, our entire buyer network in Zurich goes dark!”

“I’m trying, Commander, but the physical locking bolts are fused to the structural frame!” the technician stammered, sweat pouring down his forehead.

Click.

The heavy steel door to the server bay swung inward with a slow, deliberate motion.

The three mercenaries whirled around instantly, raising their carbines toward the entrance. But before their fingers could even twitch toward their triggers, two suppressed rounds snapped through the air with lethal precision. Both operatives dropped instantly to the steel floor without a sound.

Heinrich Voss froze, his hand hovering over his shoulder holster, his eyes widening in pure disbelief as I stepped out from the shadows of the doorway, my Sig Sauer locked dead on his chest.

“Looking for these?” I asked coldly, stepping closer until the barrel of my pistol was just inches from his collarbone.

Voss stared at me, his face draining of all color. “Avery... you died in the Nevada desert.”

“Reports of my death were greatly exaggerated, Heinrich,” I corrected smoothly. “And you are currently trespassing on an abandoned naval vessel in international waters with stolen military hardware. That makes this an act of piracy. Not corporate restructuring.”
