Chapter 35 - The Dust Clears

Within minutes, the immediate threat inside the bunker was neutralized. The remaining two mercenaries were secured alongside Director Hayes, who sat in stunned silence as he watched the tactical apparatus he had controlled for decades crumble in real-time.

Upstairs, the sound of helicopter engines began to recede. Ethan checked the external thermal monitors and let out a long, relieved breath.

“They’re pulling back,” Ethan reported, leaning against the main console. “They must have received an automated alert from Washington. The DOJ just issued nationwide arrest warrants for half the Joint Chiefs of Staff and seized every asset linked to Project Ironclad. The cavalry didn’t even need to arrive—the truth beat them to the punch.”

I lowered my weapon, sliding it back into its holster, and walked over to the central monitor. The glowing screen displayed a live feed of major news networks broadcasting breaking reports about the mass resignation of senior defense officials and an ongoing federal investigation into high-level military corruption.

Director Hayes looked up at me, his voice barely above a whisper. “You think you’ve won, Avery. But institutional power doesn’t just disappear because of a leaked data dump. Someone else will step into the vacuum. The machine never stops.”

“Maybe not,” I replied, looking down at him with a calm, unwavering gaze. “But today, the machine has to answer to the people it was sworn to protect. And for now, that’s enough.”

We left Hayes and his men locked securely inside the bunker with enough emergency rations and satellite communication links to notify federal authorities of their exact location once we were safely clear of the area.

By sunrise, our black SUV was speeding westward back toward the quiet refuge of Lake Tahoe, leaving the desolate Nevada desert and the ghosts of our past far behind us.
