Chapter 12 - The Institutional Collapse

Down in Reno, far from the pristine mountain air of Lake Tahoe, the fluorescent lights of the budget motel room buzzed with a relentless, migraine-inducing hum.
David Vance paced the worn, patterned carpet of Room 114, his dress shirt wrinkled and smelling faintly of stale cigarette smoke and cheap motel detergent. His hands trembled as he held his smartphone to his ear for the fourth time in ten minutes.
“Come on, pick up, Marcus,” David muttered under his breath, his eyes darting toward the small kitchenette where Olivia sat slumped over a laminate table, staring blankly into a paper cup of lukewarm tap water.
“He’s not going to answer, David,” Olivia said, her voice hollow, devoid of the haughty, condescending snap that had defined her demeanor during her brief tenure as the self-appointed mistress of the Tahoe villa. Without her designer wardrobe—which Michael Vance’s recovery team had efficiently impounded along with their vehicles—she looked remarkably small, almost fragile.
“Shut up, Olivia!” David snapped, spinning around to glare at her. “Marcus is a senior partner at Vanguard Capital. He handles multi-million-dollar portfolios! He’s not going to abandon us just because my sister decided to weaponize some high-priced corporate lawyers against our family estate!”
Just as David raised the phone to try another direct line, the screen lit up with an incoming call from Marcus Vance himself.
David let out a sharp breath of relief, swiping the screen instantly. “Marcus! Thank God. Look, we have a massive emergency. My sister—the ungrateful military brat—used some legal loophole to freeze our accounts in Sacramento. We need you to shift those offshore tranches immediately before—”
“David, shut your mouth and listen to me very carefully,” Marcus’s voice didn't sound like a reassuring old friend. It sounded cold, metallic, and terrified.
“What? What are you talking about?” David faltered, the confident rhythm of his pacing stuttering to a halt.
“Half an hour ago, my compliance officer walked into my office and dumped a three-hundred-page forensic audit on my desk,” Marcus hissed through the receiver, the sound of keyboard clacking and frantic shouting echoing in the background of his office. “It details every single routing number, every phantom LLC, and every illicit transfer we funneled through the Delaware shell companies over the last four years.”
David’s face drained of what little color remained in it. “How... how did you get audited? That system was airtight!”
“Airtight?” Marcus roared, his professional composure completely shattering. “It was built on a house of cards! And within the last twenty minutes, that exact audit was sent via secure encrypted broadcast to our top five institutional investors, the SEC compliance division, and every major financial news outlet on the West Coast! Vanguard Capital’s stock has plummeted thirty percent in pre-market trading, our primary backers are pulling their liquidity as we speak, and federal agents are currently downstairs seizing the hard drives!”
The phone slipped slightly from David’s sweaty palm. “Federal... federal agents?”
“If the government doesn't put me away for wire fraud, Marcus Vance is going to spend the next twenty years in a federal penitentiary,” Marcus spat venomously. “And if I find out you or your family gave anyone a single thread to pull this sweater apart, I will personally ensure you share a cell with me. Do not ever call this number again.”
Click.
The dial tone hummed monotonously in David’s ear.
He slowly lowered the phone, his knees completely giving out beneath him. He didn't even try to break his fall; he simply collapsed sideways against the edge of the cheap laminate table, knocking Olivia’s paper cup of water to the floor where it spilled in a widening, pathetic puddle across the stained carpet.
“David? David, what is it?” Olivia scrambled backward in her chair, her eyes wide with mounting terror as she looked at her husband’s ashen, expressionless face. “What did Marcus say?”
David stared blankly at the wall, the harsh fluorescent light reflecting off his wide, unblinking eyes.

“We’re done,” David whispered, his voice cracking into a broken sob. “Everything... is gone.”
