Chapter 55 - The Heart of the Chimera

The interior of Site 99 smelled of ozone, sterile metallic surfaces, and the faint, unmistakable hum of massive quantum server banks working at maximum capacity. Unlike the clinical white corridors of the Swiss vault, this facility felt subterranean, industrial, and profoundly oppressive.

We moved down the stairwell in single file, our weapons raised, our footsteps swallowed entirely by heavy acoustic-damping floor tiles.

“According to the structural blueprints on David’s drive, the primary neural-synchronization mainframe is located three levels down in Sub-Level 4,” Ethan whispered through our secure comms link. “That’s where the global trigger clock is housed.”

As we reached the bottom of the stairwell, the corridor opened up into a massive, cavernous central chamber. Rows upon rows of towering black server racks stretched out under the harsh glare of industrial overhead lights, and in the center of the room sat a raised glass-enclosed control hub overlooking the entire mainframe array.

And standing inside the control hub, illuminated by the cold blue light of a dozen massive monitors, was a figure I never expected to see outside of an intelligence briefing.

General Vance—the man who was supposed to have retired quietly to a remote estate in Vermont, the man whose shadow had loomed over every black-ops tragedy of the past decade.

He wasn’t frail, nor was he hiding. He stood tall, dressed in an immaculate civilian suit, watching lines of green global synchronization code tick down toward zero.
