Chapter 44 - Fire in the Server Room

“Hold your position until they cross the threshold,” I whispered, sliding my Sig Sauer from its holster and lowering my stance behind the reinforced steel corner of the cooling unit.

The heavy boots stopped just outside the doorway of our server bay. A low, clipped voice barked an order in German over a tactical radio, followed by the metallic click of safety switches being flicked off.

Before they could toss a breach grenade into our sector, Ethan slammed his hand onto his console’s master execution key. “Download sequence initiated! We have thirty seconds before the data is locked in our loop!”

The first mercenary stepped through the doorway, his night-vision goggles glowing faintly in the dim server light.

I didn't hesitate. I stepped out from behind the cover, firing two rapid, controlled shots that struck the mercenary square in his synthetic ceramic chest plate, spinning him hard against the wall and knocking him unconscious.

The second guard instantly swung his weapon toward me, but Sarah moved with blinding speed, firing a precise suppressive round that clipped the guard’s weapon barrel and sent him stumbling backward into the server racks.

“Clear!” Sarah shouted, keeping her weapon trained on the hallway as Ethan’s monitor flashed a brilliant, solid green: DOWNLOAD COMPLETE. SYSTEM REDIRECTED.

“The data is ours!” Ethan yelled, ripping his portable drive from the console port and shoving it into his tactical vest pocket. “And Plan Redoubt has been permanently quarantined inside an encrypted loop! They can’t execute the blackout!”

“Then we get out of here before the entire garrison comes down on our heads,” I ordered, turning toward the service tunnel exit.
