Chapter 50 - The Next Horizon

The cold metal of the microchip felt heavy in my palm. The illusion of a permanent, quiet retirement at the lake dissolved into the crisp morning air, replaced by the familiar, sharp clarity of a new mission. The watch wasn’t over after all; it had merely evolved.
I looked from the microchip up to David, then back toward the grand Tahoe villa visible across the sparkling expanse of the lake.
“What’s on this drive, David?” I asked, my voice steady and resolute.
“Everything you need to find the architects,” David answered, turning back toward his wooden skiff. “They know you survived the Swiss vault raid. They know you dismantled their corporate shield. And they are already moving their pieces into position.”
He untied the rope of his skiff, stepping down into the boat as the motor sputtered to life with a quiet, low hum.
“Where can we find you when we’re ready to move?” Ethan called out as David pushed away from the dock.
David didn't look back as the skiff glided out into the open water, blending seamlessly into the morning mist. “You won't find me, Ethan. When the time is right, I’ll find you.”
We watched him disappear into the gray expanse of the lake. The sun continued its climb over the jagged peaks of the Sierra Nevada, casting a warm, golden glow across the water, but the chill of the unknown lingered in the air.

I turned back to Ethan and Sarah, sliding the microchip into my tactical vest pocket.
“Well,” I said, a faint, determined smile touching the corners of my lips as I stepped back into the high-speed interceptor. “Looks like we have some reading to do before breakfast.”
