Chapter 61 - The Ripple Effect

The tranquility of the Tahoe villa lasted less than a week before the geopolitical shockwaves of the Site 99 raid began to ripple outward through international intelligence corridors. Even though Project Chimera had been permanently scrubbed, the sudden collapse of a multi-billion-dollar shadow infrastructure left a massive power vacuum in the global security apparatus.

I was sitting at my desk reviewing a stack of quiet diplomatic advisories Sarah had forwarded from The Hague when the encrypted secure line on the master console lit up with a flashing amber indicator. It wasn't a crisis alert, but rather a direct, high-priority audio handshake routed through an uncompromised military satellite channel.

“Put it on speaker, Ethan,” I instructed, leaning back in my leather chair.

Ethan tapped the master audio key. A deep, gravelly voice filled the quiet study—Director Marcus Vance, the newly appointed head of the restructured federal oversight committee in Washington, and a man who had spent his entire career cleaning up the messes left behind by his father’s generation.

“Captain Avery,” Marcus’s voice came through crisp and clear. “I hope I’m not interrupting your retirement, but we have a situation developing in the North Atlantic that requires a very specific, unofficial touch.”

“My retirement is hard-earned, Director Vance,” I replied evenly, resting my hands on the desk. “And my days of cleaning up the Pentagon’s black-ops spillover are officially over. If you have a situation in the North Atlantic, call the Coast Guard.”

“The Coast Guard can’t help with this, Avery,” Marcus countered, his tone hardening with urgency. “A decommissioned naval research vessel, the USS Prometheus, was intercepted off the Azores three hours ago. It was carrying experimental quantum data-storage cores that were supposed to have been destroyed during the Aegis purge. But here’s the complication: the transponder is pinging from an unauthorized grid coordinate, and the crew onboard isn't answering diplomatic hails.”

Ethan exchanged a quick glance with me, his expression tightening. “An unauthorized quantum core? If those fall into the wrong hands, someone could attempt to reconstruct a localized version of the Chimera network.”

“Exactly,” Marcus said over the line. “The Department of Defense can’t move a fleet carrier into international waters without triggering a major diplomatic incident with European allies. But you and Ethan can operate quietly under the radar. I’m sending the coordinates to your secure terminal now. Consider this a final, critical favor for the republic.”
