Chapter 68 - The Last Chapter

The sun dipped lower behind the jagged peaks of the Sierra Nevada, casting long, golden shadows across the hardwood floors of the grand Tahoe villa.
I sat at my mahogany desk, looking at the empty desktop where my tactical pad usually rested. For the first time in years, the space was entirely clear. No encrypted data streams, no weapon schematics, no emergency contact numbers for intelligence directors in Washington or Geneva.
Ethan walked into the study, holding a small, old-fashioned leather-bound notebook he had found in the bottom of Michael Vance’s old desk drawer during our initial move into the estate.
“What’s that?” I asked, looking up.
“Michael’s personal journal,” Ethan said quietly, walking over and placing it gently on the center of the desk. “I didn't open it before. Thought it was private. But I think it belongs to you now.”
I reached out, my fingers tracing the worn leather cover of the journal. I opened it slowly, the pages filled with Michael’s neat, familiar handwriting. The very last page, written just weeks before his passing, contained a single, handwritten note addressed to no one in particular:
“If you are reading this, it means the storm has finally passed. Never forget that peace isn’t something given to us by governments or institutions—it is something we carve out for ourselves in the silence between the battles.”

I closed the journal gently, a quiet, profound sense of peace washing over me. I stood up from my desk, walking over to join Ethan by the large glass windows as the first evening stars began to twinkle above the silent, beautiful expanse of Lake Tahoe.
The perimeter was secure. The watch was over. We were home.
