Chapter 40 - Shadows Over Geneva

The stakes had shifted fundamentally. What began as a personal fight to clear my name and dismantle a regional smuggling syndicate had erupted into a global race against time. We weren’t just hunting fugitives anymore; we were trying to prevent the systematic collapse of the modern world.

“We need to hit them where the infrastructure lives,” I said, walking over to the master tactical display and bringing up a real-time global tracking grid. “If Aegis relies on a decentralized network of underground server farms, they still need central access nodes to execute Plan Redoubt. Where is their primary administrative hub outside of Geneva?”

Sarah tapped a finger against a secondary folder containing encrypted transit manifests. “Zurich. Specifically, a high-security subterranean data vault buried deep beneath the Swiss Alps, known internally as The Vault of the Black Forest. It’s heavily fortified, guarded by private military contractors who make Viktor Petrov’s mercenaries look like mall security, and protected by an EMP-hardened perimeter.”

“A mountain fortress,” Ethan murmured, crossing his arms with a grim smile. “Just like old times, Commander. Do we pack our climbing gear or rent a tank?”

“Neither,” I replied, my mind racing through tactical permutations. “We don’t storm a mountain fortress front-facing unless we have a Trojan horse. And luckily for us, Director Hayes’s personal administrative clearance codes are still sitting in our offline server vault.”

Within two hours, the grand Tahoe villa was once again transformed into an active operational staging ground. We weren’t hiding anymore; we were mobilizing. Sarah established a secure satellite relay to coordinate with sympathetic, uncompromised intelligence assets within the International Court of Justice, while Ethan and I prepped our tactical gear for an overseas insertion.

By midnight, our private Gulfstream jet—registered under one of Michael Vance’s legacy corporate shells—was screaming across the dark expanse of the Atlantic, cutting through the stratosphere toward Switzerland under the cover of a commercial flight plan.
