Chapter 16 - Closing the Circle

David stumbled through the crusted snow, his breath pluming in thick clouds of white vapor as he clutched the leather briefcase against his chest. The wind howled through the skeletal pine branches overhead, sounding like a chorus of distant mockery.
“Hello? I’m here!” David shouted into the darkness, his voice cracking with panic. “I brought the files! Just like you asked! Where are you?”
A pair of blinding, high-intensity LED spotlights suddenly flared to life from the tree line, pinning David in a harsh, inescapable glare. He threw his hands up over his eyes, stumbling backward and dropping his briefcase into the snow.
Heavy, deliberate footsteps crunched across the frozen ground.
From out of the shadows stepped Ethan Wright, flanked by two armed federal marshals wearing tactical gear with windbreaker vests clearly displaying federal insignias.
“Looking for someone, David?” Ethan’s voice cut sharply through the freezing air.
David lowered his hands, blinking furiously against the glaring lights. As his eyes adjusted, he saw me step out from behind the tactical SUV, my hands resting casually in the pockets of my canvas jacket, my expression completely neutral.
“You...” David gasped, his knees buckling slightly as the horrifying reality of the situation crashed over him. “This... this was a setup. You tricked me!”
“You walked willingly into an automated sting operation, David,” I said, stepping closer until I stood just a few feet away from him. “You thought you could outrun a paper trail, outsmart a forensic audit, and steal from someone who spent years coordinating intelligence operations across hostile borders.”
“Please,” David sobbed, his bravado entirely evaporated as he dropped heavily to his knees in the snow. “We’re family! Dad is broken, Olivia is losing her mind—just let us go. Drop the charges!”

“Family?” I looked down at him, my voice dropping to a cold, razor-sharp whisper. “When James lay dying in that hospital bed, you didn't think about family. When you locked me out of my own home and forged my signatures, you didn't think about family. You made your bed on the cold pavement, David. Now lie in it.”
The federal marshals stepped forward, the heavy click of steel handcuffs echoing sharply through the mountain silence as they secured David’s wrists behind his back.
