Chapter 75 - The Architect's Confession

The room smelled of old paper, pipe tobacco, and damp mountain stone—a scent that immediately transported Avery back to the safehouses of Berlin and Geneva where she had first learned the trade under Michael’s strict, unforgiving tutelage.
“The network you fought on the Prometheus wasn't an independent rogue syndicate,” Michael began, picking up a wooden pipe from an ash tray and turning it slowly between his weathered fingers. “It was a splinter faction of our own directorate. When I realized the agency was using Aegis not just to monitor global security, but to engineer political coups and economic collapses across three continents, I knew I had to pull the plug.”
“So you faked your death and went underground to build a competing shadow-state?” Ethan asked, his arms crossed, his eyes narrow and skeptical.
“Not a competing state, Ethan. An off-switch,” Michael corrected, looking up with a sharp, piercing gaze. He pointed a finger toward the massive bank of quantum servers humming through the wall behind them. “Every financial transaction, every encrypted diplomatic cable, every intelligence asset deployed by every major power on earth flows through nodes connected to this very mainframe. Voss didn't break out of prison—he came here because he realized the faction in Washington was planning to weaponize the entire network during the upcoming global summit in Geneva.”
“And they’re using the remnants of Voss’s buyer network to fund it,” Avery realized, the pieces of the puzzle suddenly snapping together with terrifying clarity. “The Atlantic operation wasn't the end of the war. It was just the opening skirmish.”
“Precisely,” Michael said, standing up from his desk and walking over to a large, wall-mounted tactical map covered in grease-pencil markings and red indicator pins. The map detailed major financial exchanges, undersea communication cables, and government data centers spanning from London to Singapore. “The faction inside Washington—led by people whose names are still classified even to the Director of National Intelligence—plans to trigger a global financial blackout during the summit next month. They want to reset the board, collapse the traditional banking systems, and replace them with a centralized, unchallengeable digital currency controlled entirely by a single intelligence cabal.”
Avery stared at the map, feeling the cold realization settle deep into her bones. The quiet life at Lake Tahoe, the peaceful mornings by the water, the feeling that the watch was finally over—it had all been a comfortable illusion.

“And what do they need from us?” Avery asked, her voice steady and lethal.
Michael turned around, looking directly into her eyes with a quiet, solemn intensity. “They need the master encryption key that you and Ethan recovered from the server bay of the Prometheus. It’s the only digital signature capable of unlocking the final firewall of this mainframe. Without it, their global reset fails. With it, they control the world.”
