Chapter 18 - A New Horizon

A week later, the winter storm clouds parted completely, revealing a brilliant, crystal-clear blue sky over Lake Tahoe. The snow sparkled like a blanket of scattered diamonds across the dense pine forest surrounding the villa.
I stood out on the wrap-around glass deck, wearing a warm wool sweater, breathing in the crisp, pine-scented mountain air. The silence of the basin was absolute, untainted by the petty greed, manipulation, and betrayal that had briefly threatened to tear my life apart.
My phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out, expecting another status report from Michael Vance or a legal update from Ethan.
Instead, it was a notification from the Department of Defense—a secure transmission confirming my retirement clearance paperwork had officially been processed and finalized. My military career was officially behind me, and my new life here, in the home I had fought so hard to protect and reclaim, was finally beginning on my own terms.
Ethan stepped out onto the deck, holding a set of keys in his hand and tossing them up and catching them with a casual grin.
“Just got word from the contractor,” Ethan said, walking over to lean against the glass railing beside me. “The security upgrades are fully online. Tier-1 biometric locks on all exterior gates, encrypted perimeter sensors, and a direct satellite uplink to our private monitoring network. Nobody is ever stepping foot on this property uninvited again.”

I smiled faintly, looking out across the deep, tranquil blue waters of the lake that stretched out toward the horizon.
“Let them try,” I replied, turning away from the railing to head back inside. “My tour here is permanent.”
