Chapter 1 - The Weight of Seven Months

Ethan's boots hit the imported Italian marble with a sharp, echoing snap as he closed the distance. The string quartet near the terrace drifted into a gentle rendition of a jazz standard, a sickeningly pleasant soundtrack to the absolute terror tightening around Ethan's chest.

"Grace," Ethan said again, his voice dropping an octave as he stopped two feet away from her. "I asked you a question. What are you doing in the Bahamas? How did you even find this place?"

Grace didn't flinch. Her amber eyes remained entirely level, lacking the tearful tremors or jagged panic he was so desperately expecting. At seven months pregnant, she carried herself with a quiet, terrifying grace that made him feel like a boy caught skipping school. She looked down briefly at Vanessa, who was hovering behind Ethan like a ghost caught in broad daylight, before bringing her gaze back to her husband.

"You said you were in New York for an emergency stakeholder summit," Grace said, her voice smooth and devoid of inflection. "The Marriott Marquis in Times Square. Except when I called the front desk to have a package forwarded, they had no record of your reservation under your name, your company name, or your personal alias."

Ethan swallowed hard, his throat dry as bone. "I... I changed hotels at the last minute. The investor group moved our meetings to a private estate—"

"Mr. Calloway," Declan Pierce interrupted, his voice low, measured, and effortlessly dominant. He hadn't bothered to look at Ethan until now; his grey eyes flicked sideways with the casual indifference of a lion addressing a stray dog. "Your wife’s time is budgeted at two thousand dollars an hour today. If you have personal matters to attend to, I suggest you schedule an appointment with her legal representation."

Ethan turned on him, heat flushing his neck. "This is between me and my wife, Pierce. Keep out of it."

Declan’s lips twitched into a cold, humorless smile. "Nothing involving Grace Calloway is outside my jurisdiction anymore. We signed the preliminary acquisition terms forty minutes ago. You're looking at the new majority stakeholder of Calloway Logistics."

Ethan froze. The lobby lights seemed to dim. "What did you say?"

Grace shifted the leather folder slightly in her hand. "You were so busy playing house in the beachfront villa, Ethan, that you forgot to check your corporate compliance portal on Friday afternoon. Margin calls are a harsh reality when you empty the operating accounts to fund a mistress's lifestyle."

The elevator dinged softly, its brushed-steel doors sliding open to reveal a private, mahogany-paneled interior.

Grace stepped inside without looking back. Declan followed her, his hand hovering protectively just behind her elbow.

"Grace, wait!" Ethan lunged forward, but the elevator doors began to close with smooth, inexorable finality. Through the narrowing gap, Grace met his eyes one last time, her expression colder than winter.

Then the doors clicked shut.
