Chapter 6 - The Altitude of Silence

High above the Atlantic coastline, the cabin of the Gulfstream G650 hummed with a smooth, almost imperceptible vibration.

Grace sat in the plush leather club chair, her gaze fixed out the triple-paned window as the turquoise waters of the Bahamas faded into a blanket of white cumulus clouds. The cabin air was climate-controlled and crisp, smelling faintly of leather and expensive espresso, a far cry from the humid chaos of the resort portico she had left behind twenty minutes ago.

Across the aisle, Declan Pierce adjusted his gold-rimmed reading glasses, tapping a few notes into his tablet before looking up at her.

"The pilot just confirmed our flight path," Declan said, his tone low and conversational. "We’ll touch down at Raleigh-Durham International in just under two hours. My legal team has already secured the temporary receivership documents for Calloway Logistics' secondary warehouses."

Grace didn't turn her head immediately. She kept her eyes on the endless horizon, letting the steady hum of the engines anchor her racing thoughts.

"And the federal prosecutor?" Grace asked, her voice calm, though her fingers lightly stroked the fabric of her emerald maternity dress.

"Standing by," Declan replied, locking his screen. "The moment Ethan’s corporate servers were locked, the digital footprint of those offshore transfers triggered an automated financial crimes alert. By the time he manages to beg or borrow a flight back to North Carolina, the Department of Justice will have frozen his personal checking accounts, his credit lines, and every asset he tried to conceal under dummy LLCs."

Grace finally looked over at him, a faint, tired smile touching the corners of her lips. "He thought he could hide behind Vanessa, and behind a wall of corporate jargon. He never imagined that while he was busy planning his getaways, I was auditing every ledger he touched."

"Arrogance is a CEO's most expensive habit," Declan said, leaning back and studying her with a look of profound respect. "Most people in your position would have broken down in that lobby. You looked at him like he was a minor clerical error."

"Anger is a waste of metabolic energy," Grace said softly, resting her hand back over the gentle curve of her seven-month pregnancy. She felt a reassuring kick against her palm, a tiny, fierce reminder of everything she was fighting for. "I spent seven months watching him pack bags for fake business trips, listening to him lie about margin calls while buying expensive silk dresses for a vice president of communications. By the time I walked into that hotel, the grief had already burned itself out. All that was left was the math."

Before Declan could answer, his satellite phone buzzed against the polished mahogany armrest.

He glanced at the caller ID, his expression instantly sharpening. He tapped accept and pressed the device to his ear.

"Pierce here," he said crisply.

Grace watched as Declan’s gray eyes narrowed, the relaxed billionaire veneer vanishing to reveal the ruthless corporate predator who had built an eleven-billion-dollar empire from the ground up.

"Are you certain?" Declan asked into the phone. A brief pause followed, filled only by the distant roar of the jet engines. "No. Do not let them touch the physical records yet. Wait for my signal."

He ended the call, sliding the phone back onto the tray table with a heavy thud.

"What is it?" Grace asked, sitting up straighter.

Declan exhaled slowly, rubbing the bridge of his nose. "That was our lead investigator on the ground in Raleigh. It turns out Ethan wasn't just siphoning funds from Calloway Logistics to maintain a luxury lifestyle with Vanessa."

Grace’s breath caught. "What else was he doing?"
