Chapter 9 - The Arrival Gate

The private executive tarmac at Raleigh-Durham International Airport was bathed in the warm, golden light of late afternoon.
As the G650 touched down smoothly on the runway, taxiing past rows of commercial hangars toward the private aviation terminal, Grace felt the familiar, grounding rhythm of her breathing. The cabin door swung open, and the warm southern air rushed inside, carrying the scent of pine and asphalt.
Declan descended the metal steps first, his custom suit jacket catching the breeze, followed closely by Grace.
Waiting at the base of the stairs was not a local chauffeur, but two federal law enforcement officers in dark windbreakers marked FBI - FINANCIAL CRIMES DIVISION, accompanied by a tall, sharp-featured woman in a tailored gray pantsuit—Beatrice Vance herself.
Grace paused on the second-to-last step, her hand resting on her stomach.
Beatrice stepped forward, her expression a mix of cool professional respect and genuine astonishment as she looked up at the pregnant woman who had just checkmated her entire corporate strategy.
"Mrs. Calloway," Beatrice said, her voice carrying clearly across the tarmac. "I must admit, when I acquired those secondary loan notes this morning, I expected to deal with a frightened spouse begging for settlement terms. I certainly didn't expect to be bought out by Pierce Global before my coffee had even cooled."
Grace descended the final step, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Declan. "You should never underestimate a mother protecting her home, Ms. Vance."
Beatrice offered a thin, appreciative smile. "Fair enough. For the record, the fraudulent power-of-attorney documents Ethan submitted to my office have already been turned over to the federal prosecutor. His signature is on every single piece of forged paperwork."
Before Grace could reply, the heavy glass doors of the adjacent commercial terminal slid open with a sharp swoosh.
Footsteps echoed frantically across the pavement.
"Grace!"
A breathless, ragged voice cut through the afternoon air.
Grace turned slowly.
Running across the tarmac, disheveled, tie loosened, shirt collar unbuttoned, and sweat pouring down his pale face, was Ethan. His eyes were wide with blind panic, his expensive luggage left behind somewhere inside the terminal.
He had managed to scramble onto an emergency standby flight out of Nassau, desperate to reach home before his entire life collapsed, only to walk right into a federal reception committee.
"Grace, thank God!" Ethan gasped, stumbling forward, his hands outstretched as if he expected her to run into his arms the way she used to do years ago. "You have to help me! The bank accounts... the corporate servers... they locked everything! Some lunatic federal agents stopped me at baggage claim—"
He stopped dead in his tracks three feet away.
He finally saw who was standing beside her.
He saw Declan Pierce, hands tucked into his trouser pockets, looking at him with the detached curiosity of a scientist observing a specimen under a microscope.
He saw Beatrice Vance holding a federal subpoena.
And, most terrifyingly of all, he saw his wife—calm, radiant, untouchable, and wearing an emerald maternity dress that suddenly looked like executioner's silk.
Ethan’s mouth opened, but no words came out. His chest heaved as the horrifying, undeniable truth washed over him like a tidal wave.

"Hello, Ethan," Grace said softly, her voice cutting through the humid afternoon silence like a razor blade. "Did you enjoy your trip to the Bahamas?"
