Chapter 8 - The Terminal Descent

The G650 began its gradual, sweeping descent, banking smoothly over the patchwork quilt of green fields and rolling hills that marked the outskirts of the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area.
Inside the cabin, Grace had regained her composure, though the chill in her veins remained. She stood near the small galley counter, pouring a cup of hot black coffee, watching the distant skyline of downtown Raleigh rise through the clouds.
"We're twenty minutes out," Declan announced, walking up beside her and handing her a sealed envelope bearing the emblem of Pierce Global’s primary legal counsel. "Your lead attorney back in the city managed to secure an emergency injunction from Judge Harrison. The moment Ethan steps off his commercial flight from the Bahamas, federal marshals will be waiting at the gate."
Grace took the envelope, sliding her finger under the flap. "And Vanessa?"
"Left behind at the resort to figure out her own ride," Declan said dryly. "According to our airport informants, she spent the last thirty minutes screaming at the hotel concierge because her corporate credit card was declined at the gift shop."
A humorless, bitter laugh escaped Grace’s lips. "She thought she was marrying a titan of industry. Turns out she was just a very expensive accessory to a sinking ship."
"People who build their lives on deceit usually find out too late that the foundation is hollow," Declan noted, his gray eyes softening as he looked down at her. "Are you holding up okay? Flying across international lines while seven months pregnant and orchestrating a corporate hostile takeover isn't exactly standard prenatal care."
Grace turned to face him, leaning back against the marble counter. She looked at the man who had effortlessly stepped into her chaos, transforming what should have been her most devastating public humiliation into a masterclass in calculated retribution.
"I've never felt stronger, Declan," Grace said honestly. For the first time in three years, she felt like her life belonged to her again—not defined by Ethan’s expectations, not hidden behind a wealthy husband's shadow, but standing entirely on her own terms. "For a long time, I thought staying in that marriage, keeping sweet, and looking the other way was what a good wife was supposed to do. Ethan convinced me I was fragile."
"Ethan is an idiot," Declan said without a moment's hesitation.
Grace smiled, a genuine, radiant expression that reached all the way to her eyes. "He is. And by the time the sun sets tonight, he's going to find out just how fragile an eleven-billion-dollar corporate dismantling really is."
The captain's voice crackled over the intercom, announcing their final approach and local weather conditions in Raleigh.
Grace walked back to her seat, fastening her seatbelt and sliding the legal documents neatly into her leather folder. As the jet’s landing gear locked into place with a heavy, mechanical thud, she looked out the window once more.
They were home.
