Chapter 22 - The Shadows of the Champs-Élysées

The afternoon traffic along the Avenue des Champs-Élysées hummed with the steady, frantic pulse of Parisian life, but inside the exclusive, members-only Cercle de la Paix, an oppressive, suffocating silence reigned.

Seated in a secluded corner booth flanked by wood-paneled walls and velvet drapes, Grace Calloway sat nursing a sparkling mineral water, her dark sunglasses resting on the white linen tablecloth. Across from her sat Declan, his posture relaxed yet hyper-vigilant, his eyes scanning every movement in the dimly lit lounge.

They hadn't come here to hide. They had come to spring a trap.

According to the intelligence packet intercepted by their Zurich team, the Orion Syndicate was attempting a hostile buyout of Aegis Global’s European logistics hubs by leveraging old, forged debts inherited from Ethan Calloway’s defunct shell companies. And the person orchestrating the local acquisition was none other than Vivienne Vance—Julian’s fiercely ambitious sister and a high-ranking asset within the syndicate's financial clearing division.

"She's late," Declan muttered, checking his watch. High-end Swiss chronometers ticked with ruthless precision, matching the tension in the room.

"People like Vivienne like to make an entrance," Grace replied calmly, adjusting her silk scarf. "They want you to feel small before they even sit down at the table. It's an amateur psychological play."

A moment later, the heavy velvet curtain parted. Striding into the private booth with an air of aristocratic entitlement was Vivienne Vance. She wore a sharp, blood-red Dior pantsuit, her dark hair slicked back into a high ponytail, and a diamond choker sparkling coldly beneath the ambient lighting.

Vivienne stopped dead in her tracks when she saw Grace and Declan sitting in the booth. For a fraction of a second, her composure fractured, her eyes widening in genuine shock. She had expected to meet a mid-level European proxy, not the CEO of Aegis Global and the man who had broken her cousin's arm in a North Carolina study.

"Mr. Pierce. Mrs. Calloway-Pierce," Vivienne recovered quickly, flashing a razor-thin, venomous smile as she slid effortlessly into the leather seat opposite them. "I must admit, I didn't expect the American royalty to grace our humble Parisian establishment in person."

"Save the performance, Vivienne," Grace said, her voice dropping into a register of absolute, freezing authority. She didn't smile. She didn't offer a handshake. She simply stared at the other woman with unblinking intensity. "You're trespassing on corporate territory that belongs to Aegis Global, using forged debt instruments that were rendered null and void by federal receivership courts in Raleigh six months ago."

Vivienne’s smile vanished. She leaned forward, resting her manicured hands on the table. "You think a few American federal judges have jurisdiction over European private equity, Grace? You're playing chess in a park while the Orion Syndicate owns the entire city block. That debt is real, the contracts are signed, and if you don't hand over operational control of the European logistics network by sundown, we will release forensic audits that will tank your stock before the opening bell in New York."

Declan let out a cold, humorless chuckle. He reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out a sleek silver flash drive, and tossed it carelessly onto the center of the table. It slid across the linen and came to a stop right against Vivienne's coffee cup.

"What is this?" Vivienne asked, her eyes darting suspiciously to the drive.

"That," Declan said smoothly, leaning forward until he was inches from her face, "is a complete digital ledger of every offshore money-laundering transaction, tax evasion scheme, and proxy bribe managed by the Orion Syndicate across France and Switzerland over the last decade. It includes your personal sign-offs, Vivienne."

Vivienne’s face drained of color. The blood-red suit suddenly looked like armor that had been pierced straight through the heart.

"You're bluffing," she whispered, her voice trembling slightly.

"Open your tablet, Vivienne," Grace instructed softly, her dark eyes gleaming with quiet triumph. "Check your encrypted corporate inbox. We didn't come here to negotiate with a proxy. We came here to deliver your pink slip."
