Chapter 23 - The Siege of the Parisian Vaults

Vivienne’s hands shook visibly as she pulled a sleek rose-gold tablet from her leather briefcase, tapped the screen with a trembling thumb, and opened her encrypted messaging client.

The screen flashed red. An automated security warning from her own corporate server blared silently across the display: CRITICAL SYSTEM BREACH. ALL ASSETS FROZEN. COMPLIANCE AUDIT INITIATED BY SWISS FEDERAL AUTHORITIES.

She looked up, her eyes wide with sheer terror. "You... you didn't just hack our local server. You bypassed the primary Swiss firewall."

"Arthur Vance is very good at what he does," Declan said evenly, leaning back in his seat and crossing his arms. "And unlike your cousin Julian, we don't rely on brute-force lock-picking. We bought the bank that held your syndicate's primary liquidity accounts three days ago."

Vivienne slammed the tablet down onto the table, the sharp clatter echoing through the wood-paneled booth. The veneer of sophisticated corporate predator completely shattered, leaving behind a cornered animal desperate for escape.

"You think freezing my accounts stops the syndicate?" Vivienne hissed, her voice vibrating with suppressed rage. "The Orion Syndicate isn't a bank account, Mr. Pierce. It's a network of influential old-money families who control the energy grids, the shipping lanes, and the political machinery of half of Western Europe. If you destroy me, someone much worse will step into my place before the week is out."

Grace didn't flinch. She picked up her glass of mineral water, took a slow, deliberate sip, and set it back down before leaning forward to meet Vivienne's panicked gaze.

"Let them try," Grace said quietly, her voice carrying an absolute, unyielding ironclad resolve. "Every single person who has ever tried to use my past to control my future has ended up in a federal penitentiary or fleeing across an ocean. You chose to sit at a table you didn't build, Vivienne. Now you get to watch it burn."

Without waiting for a response, Grace and Declan stood up simultaneously. Declan tossed a hundred-euro bill onto the table to cover the drinks, and together, they turned their backs on the frozen executive, walking out of the Cercle de la Paix into the bright, crisp afternoon air of the Parisian boulevard.

As they slid into the back of their waiting black bulletproof Mercedes-Benz, Declan looked over at his wife with a look of fierce, profound admiration.

"You handled her like a seasoned statesman," Declan murmured, wrapping an arm around her shoulders.

"I'm done running from ghosts, Declan," Grace replied, watching the Parisian storefronts blur past the tinted window. "If the Orion Syndicate wants war, we'll give them a front-row seat to the collapse of their entire empire."

The secure phone in Declan’s lap buzzed instantly—not an alert from Zurich this time, but an encrypted ping directly from their private security operations center in London.

Declan picked up the device, read the encrypted text string, and his expression instantly darkened.

"What is it?" Grace asked, sensing the sudden shift in the atmosphere.

"That wasn't just a local threat in Paris," Declan said grimly, holding out the screen for her to read. "The Orion Syndicate just activated a dormant asset inside our London corporate headquarters. They're targeting our primary supply-chain servers. They're trying to shut down Aegis Global's global operations all at once."

Grace stared at the screen, her amber eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. "They're trying to blind us."

"Worse," Declan replied, his voice hard as steel. "They're forcing us to split our forces. They want us running back to London while their main operative makes a move on our private estate here in France."
