Chapter 10 - The Federal Reception

Ethan froze, his arms still half-raised, his eyes darting frantically between Declan, Beatrice, and the two federal agents who were now stepping quietly behind him.

"Grace... what is this?" Ethan stammered, his voice cracking into a high-pitched, pathetic whine. He swallowed hard, trying to summon the arrogant executive authority he usually wore like armor, but it shattered instantly against the cold, unyielding wall of her stare. "You... you set this up? All of it?"

"Set what up, Ethan?" Grace asked, tilting her head with quiet mockery. "I merely went on a business trip. You're the one who forgot to check your compliance portal before abandoning your company to chase a vice president of communications across the Atlantic."

"That—that was business!" Ethan lied desperately, his voice rising in panic as he glanced sideways at the FBI agents who were now closing the distance behind him. "Vanessa was just a colleague! We were reviewing international logistics expansion! You can't do this to me, Grace! We're married! Everything I built belongs to both of us!"

"Correction," Declan Pierce interjected, his voice deep, calm, and effortlessly commanding. He stepped slightly forward, towering over Ethan by half a head. "Mr. Calloway, you didn't build anything. You inherited a mid-tier logistics firm from your father, leveraged it into bankruptcy to fund your personal indiscretions, and tried to illegally mortgage your wife's pre-marital property using forged federal affidavits."

Declan paused, letting the cold reality settle into Ethan's bones.

"And as of 4:15 PM today," Declan finished, "Pierce Global holds the primary debt notes on every square inch of commercial and residential property bearing your name. You are legally, financially, and professionally bankrupt."

Ethan spun back toward Grace, tears of sheer humiliation pricking the corners of his eyes. He dropped his voice into a desperate, groveling whisper, taking a frantic step forward.

"Grace, please," he pleaded, reaching out to grab the edge of her coat. "Please, think of the baby. Think of our family! We can fix this. I'll dump Vanessa today, I swear to God I will. Just tell these men to back off. Tell Pierce to call off his lawyers!"

Before Ethan’s fingers could touch her coat, the two federal agents moved with swift, practiced precision.

Heavy hands clamped down firmly onto Ethan’s shoulders, spinning him around and forcing his arms behind his back. A pair of steel handcuffs clicked into place with a sharp, echoing snap that sounded like the final gavel of a courtroom.

"Ethan Calloway," the lead federal agent stated loudly, reading the formal charges into the afternoon air. "You are under arrest for wire fraud, identity theft, interstate forgery, and financial embezzlement under federal code section—"

"Grace! Grace, make them stop!" Ethan screamed, thrashing futilely against the agents as they dragged him backward across the tarmac toward a waiting unmarked federal sedan. "You can't do this to me! You're my wife!"

Grace didn't flinch. She didn't look away. She watched with absolute, unblinking composure as her husband—the man who had thought he could lie, cheat, and steal his way through life while treating her loyalty like a doormat—was shoved unceremoniously into the back seat of the police cruiser.

The heavy door slammed shut.

The siren didn't even need to wail as the sedan pulled away smoothly, escorted by a pair of black SUVs toward the federal detention center downtown.

The tarmac grew quiet again, save for the gentle rustle of the evening breeze sweeping across the runway.

Grace let out a long, slow breath, feeling twenty pounds of invisible weight lift off her shoulders. She placed her hand back over her stomach, feeling the baby give a gentle, steady kick.

Declan stepped closer, offering her a calm, reassuring smile.

"Well," Declan murmured, offering his arm to her. "Shall we go home?"

May you like

Grace took his arm, her amber eyes shining with a fierce, unbreakable light as she looked toward the horizon.

"Yes," Grace said softly. "Let's go home."
