Chapter 18 - The Confrontation in the Study

The beam of Julian’s flashlight illuminated Declan standing tall and unblinking in the doorway. For a fraction of a second, panic flickered in Julian’s eyes before he forced a slick, nervous grin onto his face.

"Mr. Pierce," Julian said smoothly, trying to mask the tremor in his voice as he kept one hand tightly gripped around the encrypted hard drive. "What a pleasant surprise. I’m just conducting a... private audit on behalf of certain unsecured creditors."

"You’re trespassing, Julian," Declan replied, his voice dropping into a dangerous, measured register as he took a deliberate step into the room. "And you’re attempting to steal evidence tied to ongoing federal racketeering indictments. That turns your little corporate espionage hobby into a federal felony."

Julian's smile vanished. He realized there was no bluffing his way past Declan. He cast a frantic glance toward the French doors leading out to the garden patio.

"Step aside, Pierce," Julian snarled, suddenly drawing a heavy-duty titanium tactical blade from his belt, the steel glinting menacingly under the dim light. "I didn't come all this way to walk away empty-handed. That hard drive is worth millions to the right buyer, and I’m not going back to prison for anyone."

Declan didn't flinch. Instead, a cold, lethal calm washed over his features. Years before he became a corporate titan, Declan had learned how to handle violent threats in environments far more unforgiving than a North Carolina study.

As Julian lunged forward with the knife aimed squarely at his shoulder, Declan moved with lightning speed. He sidestepped the thrust with effortless precision, grabbed Julian’s wrist, and delivered a devastating, lightning-fast palm strike to Julian's elbow joint.

Crack!

A sharp shriek of agony escaped Julian’s lips as his arm buckled backward. The titanium blade clattered uselessly onto the Persian rug. Before Julian could recover his balance, Declan swept his leg out, sending Julian crashing hard onto the mahogany desk before slamming him face-down onto the floor with his arm pinned behind his back in a crushing submission hold.

The hard drive slipped from Julian’s nerveless fingers, rolling across the floorboards to stop right at Declan’s polished leather shoe.

Declan bent down, picked up the drive, and slipped it into his jacket pocket. He leaned down close to Julian’s ear, his voice like grinding stone. "Tell your handlers that if anyone ever comes near Grace or our family again, I won't just hand them over to the FBI. I’ll dismantle whatever is left of their lives piece by piece."
