Chapter 5 - The Closing Door

The heavy thud of the Maybach’s door sealing shut sounded like a gunshot in the humid Bahamian afternoon air.

Ethan stood frozen on the sidewalk, watching through the tinted rear window as Grace didn't even turn her head to look at him as the luxury vehicle pulled away smoothly from the portico. The exhaust hummed softly, blending into the background noise of the resort traffic before disappearing down the palm-lined drive toward the private airstrip.

"Ethan..." Vanessa whispered, stepping up beside him, her voice small and pathetic. "What are we going to do? Our bags are still in the villa. And my return flight isn't until Tuesday."

Ethan didn't answer her. He couldn't.

His phone buzzed in his pocket. It vibrated once, twice, three times in rapid succession—automated emergency alerts from his corporate server.

With trembling fingers, he pulled the device out and unlocked the screen.

A push notification flashed across the top banner from the company's chief financial officer: URGENT: All corporate servers locked by Pierce Global administrative override. FBI field agents just arrived at the downtown headquarters with a search warrant.

Ethan stared at the screen as the words blurred together.

The money was gone. The company was gone. His wife was gone. And the man he had cheated on her with, the woman standing beside him in her expensive red dress, suddenly looked like a total stranger who had hitched her wagon to a burning train.

"Ethan, talk to me!" Vanessa demanded, grabbing his arm. "Where are we going to sleep tonight? We can't stay here!"

Ethan slowly turned his head to look at her. The panic inside him had finally crystallized into something cold, dark, and venomous.

"Get an Uber," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a harsh, lifeless whisper.

Vanessa’s jaw dropped. "An Uber? To where? My apartment is back in Atlanta!"

"I don't care," Ethan snarled, shoving her hand off his arm. "Figure it out yourself."

He turned and bolted back toward the hotel entrance, desperate to find a phone, a lawyer, anyone who could tell him how a man goes from sitting on top of the world to losing everything in less than ten minutes.

Inside the grand lobby, under the glittering champagne-gold chandeliers, the string quartet had begun playing a new song.

And high above them, soaring across the Atlantic airspace in a private Gulfstream jet, Grace Calloway watched the coastline of the island shrink into the horizon, her hand resting peacefully on her stomach as the true reckoning finally began.
