Chapter 2 - The Empty Suite

Ethan stared at the glowing metal numbers above the elevator bank as they climbed past floor four, floor five, floor six.

"Ethan," Vanessa whispered, her voice trembling as she sidled up beside him, her silk red dress suddenly looking entirely out of place in the glaring reality of the lobby. "Who was that man? Was that... was that Declan Pierce?"

"Shut up, Vanessa," Ethan snapped, turning on her with a ferocity that made her step back. "Just shut the hell up!"

He spun around, cutting across the lobby toward the reception desk. The concierge, a man in a stiff tuxedo with a gold name tag pinned to his lapel, offered a polite, practiced smile as Ethan slammed his hands down on the mahogany counter.

"The penthouse," Ethan demanded, panting slightly. "Suite 1204. Who checked into Suite 1204?"

The concierge blinked, his smile cooling. "I'm sorry, sir, but guest registry information is strictly confidential—"

"I am Ethan Calloway! I am a tier-one executive at this resort!" Ethan shouted, drawing the attention of several nearby guests. "My wife is up in that suite. I need to know who authorized her access."

"Mr. Calloway," a calm, crisp voice interrupted from behind him.

Ethan turned. Standing there was the hotel general manager, flanked by two burly security guards in dark suits who had materialized out of nowhere.

"Mr. Calloway," the manager repeated smoothly. "We received instructions from Pierce Global’s executive security detail ten minutes ago. You are no longer permitted within fifty yards of Suite 1204, nor are you authorized to charge any further expenses to your company folio here at the Halcyon Crown."

Ethan stared at him, bewildered. "My company folio? I own a forty percent stake in Calloway Logistics! I've stayed at this resort twice a year for a decade!"

"Not anymore," the manager said politely, handing Ethan a sleek black envelope with his name embossed in silver. "Your corporate credit lines were frozen at 3:15 PM Eastern Standard Time. Effective immediately, your room key has been deactivated."

Ethan snatched the envelope, tearing it open with shaking fingers. Inside was a single printed notice from First National Bank: Notice of Asset Freeze and Default Acceleration.

Vanessa gasped, looking over his shoulder. "Ethan... what does that mean?"

May you like

It meant he was broke. And worse, he was completely blind.
