Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Ultimatum

The heavy wood of the front door groaned under Julian’s sudden, violent shove, rattling the frame and sending a sharp shock through my arms as I braced myself against the hallway console.

"Open the door, Evelyn!" Julian shouted, his voice muffled and manic through the panels. "You think you've won? You think you can just erase me? I built Vale Meridian with my bare hands! I made you somebody!"

He slammed his shoulder against the door again.

Bang.

I didn't flinch. I reached out with my left hand, punched the four-digit master code into the smart-home security panel by the wall, and hit the manual override button.

"You want to talk?" I called out, my voice cutting through the dark hallway with absolute, razor-sharp authority. "Fine. Let's talk."

I grabbed the smart-home intercom receiver and pressed the broadcast button, amplifying my voice through the outdoor speaker system on the front porch.

"The front door is unlocked, Julian," I said coldly. "Step inside."

The rattling stopped instantly.

For a long, tense moment, absolute silence hung in the night air outside. Then, the heavy wooden door slowly pushed inward, creaking on its hinges.

Julian stepped across the threshold into the dimly lit foyer. He looked worse than he had at the office—his eyes were bloodshot and wild, his clothes stained, and his posture was that of a cornered animal with nothing left to lose. He took a slow step toward me, his chest heaving.

"Evelyn..." he began, his voice dropping into a pathetic, wheedling tone as he reached out a trembling hand. "Look at us. We're a family. We can fix this. Drop the charges, sign the settlement over to my secondary trust, and we can leave the city together. We can start over."

I didn't move an inch. I stood my ground, holding the heavy brass candlestick like a weight in my right hand, looking down at the man who had promised to protect me and instead left me to bleed alone.

"Start over?" I repeated quietly, a cold, bitter smile touching my lips. "With what, Julian? With the money you embezzled? With the career you built on lies? Or do you want to start over in the federal penitentiary where you're going to spend the next twenty years?"

Julian’s face twisted into an ugly, mask-like grimace of pure rage. The pathetic facade melted away instantly, revealing the monster underneath.

"You think you're untouchable now?" he snarled, lunging forward down the hallway toward me. "You're just a bitter, broken woman! Without me, you're—"

Before he could take another step, the front lawn illuminated in a blinding flash of red and blue light.

A dozen federal agents and local police officers swarmed the porch, their flashlights cutting through the dark foyer like lasers. Before Julian could even turn around, two heavy sets of hands grabbed him from behind, slamming him facedown onto the hardwood floor of the entryway with a loud, definitive thud.

"Julian Vale, you are in violation of a federal restraining order, breaking and entering, and making terroristic threats," an officer barked, clicking the steel cuffs onto his wrists with brutal efficiency.

As they hauled him up off the floor—kicking and screaming obscenities into the midnight air—Agent Vance stepped through the open doorway, pausing to look at me with a respectful, grave nod.

"Are you alright, Mrs. Vale?" the agent asked.

May you like

I looked down at the empty foyer, then out the open door toward the flashing cruiser lights fading down the street. The air in the house finally felt clean.

"I'm more than alright," I said softly, closing the heavy wooden door and locking the deadbolt behind them.
