Chapter 61 - The Shadow Over Zurich

The morning sun over Manhattan had barely climbed past the steel-and-glass canyons of Midtown when a secure ping chimed across Arthur’s primary monitor in the sub-level command center of Vale Meridian Tower.

Evelyn was already seated at her mahogany desk, reviewing the final financial audits from the global pediatric rollout, when the secure intercom hissed to life.

"Madam Chair," Arthur’s gravelly, unwavering voice echoed through the speaker. "We’ve just intercepted a localized data burst originating from a private IP relay in Zurich. It bypassed our primary firewall checks before being flagged by the secondary heuristic filters."

Evelyn didn't blink. Her pen hovered momentarily over the digital signature pad before she set it down deliberately. "Trace it, Arthur. Who was on the other end?"

"That's the complication," Arthur replied, a hint of professional frustration creeping into his tone. "The signal was routed through three distinct shell corporations currently registered under the Vanguard umbrella—entities that Julian Thorne’s legal counsel officially swore were dissolved during Friday's asset transfer."

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed, a cold fire igniting deep within her chest. Julian Thorne was cornered, isolated, and legally castrated—or so Sarah Lin’s international team had reported less than forty-eight hours ago. But men like Thorne didn't simply surrender when the chessboard collapsed; they flipped the table and looked for a knife in the dark.

"He's playing a long game," Evelyn murmured, standing up and walking toward the floor-to-ceiling windows. The sprawling panorama of the city below looked vibrant and indifferent to the quiet war being waged in the shadows. "If the Vanguard assets were officially signed off by Swiss regulators, how did a data burst slip through?"

"Because the asset transfer covered financial holdings, Madam Chair, not digital infrastructure," Arthur explained grimly. "Thorne retained a proprietary quantum encryption key tied to a legacy server farm buried beneath Lake Zürich. He’s communicating with someone inside our European subsidiary."

Evelyn turned sharply away from the glass. "A mole. Inside our European executive ranks."

"We are running background sweeps on every regional director in Zurich, London, and Frankfurt as we speak," Arthur confirmed. "Shall I deploy a tactical asset to secure the Zurich facility?"

"No," Evelyn commanded, her voice dropping into a register of absolute, icy authority. "Do not spook them. If there is a rat in our European division, I want to watch them scurry into the open. Let them think their encrypted message reached its destination unhindered. Feed them a controlled digital breadcrumb."

"Understood, Madam Chair. I'll configure a decoy telemetry package."

Evelyn severed the connection, walking back to her desk with purposeful strides. The sanctuary of her mother’s Connecticut estate felt worlds away now, replaced by the razor-sharp focus of an executive predator ready to hunt down the last remnants of her enemies. Thorne wanted a war of attrition? She would give him an absolute annihilation.
