Chapter 22 - The Visitor from the Past

Harrison Vance looked nothing like the high-powered attorneys who typically graced the thirty-fourth floor of Vale Meridian. He wore a rumpled wool suit, cheap wire-rimmed glasses, and carried a frayed leather briefcase that looked like it had survived a war zone.

He stood up as I walked into the private lounge, smoothing down his lapels with nervous, trembling fingers.

"Mrs. Vale," he said, offering a stiff, professional nod. "Thank you for seeing me on such short notice."

"You used an expired executive clearance code to get up here, Mr. Vance," I said, remaining standing near the door, my arms folded across my chest. "That tells me two things: you're desperate, and you have something you think I want. Make it quick. My security team downstairs is very efficient."

Harrison swallowed hard, pulling a slim, manila folder from his briefcase and placing it on the glass coffee table.

"I wasn't just Marcus Sterling's legal counsel," Harrison began, his voice dropping into a cautious whisper. "For three years, I served as the quiet custodian for Julian’s secondary private trust—the one registered under the name Aegis Holdings that the federal prosecutors missed during the initial raid."

I didn't move. My eyes locked onto the folder. "Missed? Arthur Vance’s team tore Julian's digital architecture apart down to the bare silicon."

"They missed it because it wasn't digital," Harrison replied, tapping a finger against the manila cover. "It was physical. A physical safety deposit box located in a private vault beneath the Federal Reserve annex in lower Manhattan. Julian didn't keep his final insurance policy on a server. He kept it on paper."

I walked slowly over to the table, my fingers brushing the edge of the folder. "And why are you bringing this to me instead of handing it over to the U.S. Attorney's office?"

A bitter, self-deprecating smile touched Harrison's lips. "Because the U.S. Attorney's office trades in convictions, Mrs. Vale. They want Julian behind bars for twenty-five years, which they've already secured. But they don't care about the victims who lost their investments when Julian gutted the private venture funds. And more importantly... Julian threatened my family if I ever cooperated with federal investigators. With him locked away, my family is safe. But with you in charge? I figured honesty was the best currency left on the market."

I slowly opened the folder. Inside was a single key, a notary stamp, and a handwritten ledger detailing thirty million dollars in hidden bearer bonds siphoned from Vale Meridian's seed capital during our very first year of marriage.

"If this is genuine," I said quietly, "you've just handed me the keys to the rest of Julian's kingdom."

"It's genuine," Harrison said, stepping back toward the door. "And for the record, Mrs. Vale? I'm glad you survived him."
