Chapter 62 - The Ghost in the Machine

By Tuesday afternoon, the tension inside Vale Meridian’s high-security server room on the thirty-second floor had reached a fever pitch.

Sarah Lin stood beside the primary diagnostic console, watching cascading lines of green hex code stream across three massive curved monitors. Beside her, senior network architect Marcus Vance tapped furiously at his mechanical keyboard, trying to isolate the exact routing path of the Zurich decoy packet Arthur had deployed three hours earlier.

The glass doors hissed open, and Evelyn strode into the room, her charcoal blazer casting a sharp silhouette against the blinding white lights of the server racks.

"Status, Marcus," she demanded, pulling off her leather gloves and tossing them onto a nearby table.

"It worked better than anticipated, Madam Chair," Marcus said, his brow slick with sweat as he pointed to a pulsing red node on the global map display. "The data packet didn't just bounce to Zurich. It triggered an automated decryption handshake from an unauthorized terminal located inside our Zürich research annex—specifically, the office of Dr. Heinrich Klaus, our Director of European Clinical Trials."

Sarah’s breath hitched. "Heinrich Klaus? He’s been with Vale Meridian for over a decade. He helped pioneer our initial regenerative medicine frameworks."

"Which makes him uniquely positioned to steal them," Evelyn countered coldly, stepping closer to the screen. "A man who builds an empire from the inside knows every single load-bearing wall. What was contained in the decrypted handshake?"

"It wasn't a standard file transfer," Marcus replied, pulling up a secondary payload log. "It was a biometric key request. Klaus was attempting to download our proprietary genetic sequencing algorithms for the cellular regeneration treatments—the exact intellectual property slated for our global humanitarian rollout next week."

"He’s selling out to Thorne’s syndicate," Sarah realized, her expression hardening into absolute disgust. "If Thorne gets his hands on those sequencing algorithms, he can reverse-engineer a compromised variant, flood the black market with counterfeit treatments, and destroy Vale Meridian’s global medical credibility in a single stroke."

"Not while I'm breathing," Evelyn stated, her voice cutting through the hum of the server banks like a razor.

She turned to Sarah. "Draft an immediate executive suspension notice for Dr. Klaus, effective right now. Coordinate with Swiss authorities to freeze his personal assets, revoke his corporate security clearances, and place a federal hold on his passport."

"And if he attempts to flee?" Sarah asked.

"He won't get past the lobby," Evelyn replied, her eyes flashing with dangerous brilliance. "Arthur’s tactical team touched down in Zurich twenty minutes ago. They’ve been waiting outside Klaus’s private residence since dawn. By the time we finish this sentence, Dr. Klaus will be answering very uncomfortable questions in a windowless room."
