Chapter 21 - The Ghost of the Boardroom

The autumn air had turned sharp by mid-November, frosting the edges of the high-rise windows of Vale Meridian Tower. I sat at the center of the mahogany conference table, my pen resting between my fingers as five senior compliance officers laid out the final consolidation reports for the former subsidiaries of Thorne Bio-Research.
Richard Thorne was currently residing in a federal holding facility six miles away from Julian, awaiting a trial that legal experts predicted would carry a thirty-year sentence. His empire had crumbled like a house of cards the moment our forensic audits exposed his tangled web of shell companies and illegal human testing grants.
"The acquisition of Thorne’s clinical assets is complete, Madam Chair," reported Sarah Lin, our newly appointed Chief Compliance Officer. She slid a sleek, leather-bound portfolio across the dark wood. "We’ve successfully absorbed their pediatric oncology division without triggering a single regulatory penalty from the FDA. The clinical trials you championed are fully funded and operating under independent ethical oversight."
I opened the folder, scanning the numbers. Every decimal point was clean. Every account was traceable. For the first time in five years, Vale Meridian wasn't just a machine for making money; it was fulfilling the very promise I had fought so hard to protect.
"Ensure the independent review board meets weekly," I instructed, my voice level and calm. "I don't want a single oversight left to chance. If there's even a whisper of proprietary deviation, I want to know about it before it hits the internal network."
"Understood," Sarah nodded, gathering her papers. "Also... there's a visitor waiting for you in your private reception lounge. Unscheduled. He bypassed the front desk using a legacy clearance code that wasn't purged from the system quite fast enough."
I didn't blink. "Who?"

"Marcus Sterling's former legal counsel," Sarah said, lowering her voice slightly. "A man named Harrison Vance. No relation to Arthur. He says he has information regarding the remaining offshore accounts Julian managed to hide before the federal asset freeze."
I closed the portfolio with a soft, deliberate click. "Send him in."
