Chapter 44 - The Shift in the Balance

The silence in the assembly hall stretched for several long, agonizing seconds before Ambassador Laurent shifted uncomfortably in his high-backed leather chair. The diplomatic veneer had cracked, revealing the sudden, nervous calculation of men accustomed to wielding power behind closed doors rather than facing public defiance.
"Dr. Vale," Laurent began, his voice losing its initial authoritative edge, replaced by a guarded caution. "The committee has no intention of obstructing legitimate medical progress. Our sole concern is the absolute security of genetic data across international borders."
"Then your concern should align perfectly with ours," I replied, stepping closer to the tribunal bench, maintaining direct, unblinking eye contact. "Instead of demanding our proprietary code, this committee should be adopting Vale Meridian's security protocols as the mandatory global standard. Anything less is an admission that you prefer bureaucracy over human lives."
Arthur watched from the side table, a subtle, approving smirk playing at the corner of his mouth as he observed the panel scrambling to manage the sudden shift in narrative. Flashbulbs from press cameras in the back gallery flickered relentlessly, capturing every tense micro-expression on the faces of the international delegates.
"The tribunal will take a forty-five-minute recess for private consultation," Laurent announced abruptly, banging his wooden gavel with a sharp crack that echoed off the stone walls. He stood up swiftly, gesturing for the other six delegates to follow him through a private side door behind the bench.
As the heavy oak doors closed behind the panel, the press corps erupted into a low roar of whispered speculation and hurried note-taking.
Arthur walked over to my side, handing me a secure tablet. "Well played, Evelyn. The live broadcast feed is already trending across European financial networks. Your approval rating among institutional investors just spiked another five points."
"This isn't about stock prices, Arthur," I murmured, looking toward the heavy doors where the delegates had retreated. "It's about establishing a boundary. If we show a single inch of weakness here, they will swarm us like wolves."

"They know they can't bully you," Arthur said quietly. "Laurent's exit strategy was pure panic. They're going to offer a compromise—they'll drop the audit threat in exchange for a joint research partnership where they can quietly try to reverse-engineer our cellular tech."
"And we're going to decline their partnership with polite, corporate indifference," I replied calmly. "Let's review the counter-proposal clauses while we wait."
