Chapter 36 - The Sub-Basement Protocol

The sub-basement smelled heavily of burning electrical insulation and stagnant ocean water.
Arthur led the way, his tactical flashlight cutting a sharp beam through the thick darkness as we navigated a narrow corridor lined with heavy industrial circuit breakers. Water dripped steadily from overhead pipes, hitting the concrete floor with rhythmic ticks that sounded like a ticking clock.
"Here," Arthur stopped abruptly in front of a massive, steel-paneled distribution box marked with high-voltage warning labels. "The main breaker for the offshore satellite relay. If I pull this lever, the facility goes completely dark—no external communication, no remote overrides."
"Do it," I urged, keeping watch down the dim, echoing corridor behind us.
Arthur gripped the heavy rubberized lever with both hands and heaved downward with all his physical strength.
CLACK.
The deafening whine of the facility's heavy machinery instantly died away. The flashing red klaxons sputtered, flickered, and died, plunging the sub-basement into absolute, suffocating darkness, save for the narrow beams of our flashlights.
For a long second, there was total silence.
Then, the digital voice echoed from a small emergency speaker mounted directly above the breaker box, its tone now heavily glitching and distorted by severe data packet loss.
...you... cannot... stop... the... future... Dr... Vale...
"Looks like we just pulled the plug on Dr. Ross's digital resurrection," Arthur breathed out, wiping sweat from his forehead.
"Let's get back to the surface," I said, turning sharply on my heel. "We need to contact federal authorities immediately and lock down this entire island before anyone else accesses these coordinates."

As we emerged back into the upper laboratory level, however, we found that the sudden power loss had brought a new, unexpected complication. The main blast doors at the entrance were completely dead—sealed shut by heavy magnetic locks that required an active electrical current to release.
Without power, the heavy steel doors were bolted shut from the inside, trapping us in the dark belly of an offshore vault.
