Chapter 24 - Shadows on the Wall

The penthouse was silent when I returned late that evening. The rain had started again, tapping a gentle, monotonous rhythm against the massive glass windows overlooking Central Park.
I poured a single glass of bourbon, walked over to the living room window, and plugged the recovered flash drive into the secure portable reader on my desk.
The drive unlocked with a simple alphanumeric passphrase—my own birthday, used with characteristic arrogance by a man who believed he owned every detail of my existence.
On the screen, a series of high-resolution video files popped up.
I clicked the first file, expecting more medical records, clinical trial notes, or financial spreadsheets. Instead, the screen flickered to life, showing the interior of our private suburban home—specifically, the hallway outside Daniel's nursery, recorded three years ago before we even knew I was pregnant.
It was a hidden camera feed.
In the video, Julian was standing in the hallway, talking on his phone to someone whose face was obscured by the camera angle.
“I don't care what the ethics board says,” Julian’s voice echoed from the laptop speakers, cold and ruthless. “Thorne is pushing for immediate phase-two trials using the maternal-fetal interface. If Evelyn's routine screenings show any genetic anomalies, we flag them as routine complications and route the data through the Boston subsidiary. She'll never know.”
A female voice responded from the other end of the line—a voice that sent a sudden, electric shock straight down my spine.
It wasn't Victoria Vance. It wasn't Sarah Chen.
It was Dr. Evelyn Ross—my own attending physician at the fertility clinic, the woman who had held my hand after the emergency C-section and whispered comforting platitudes about how "sometimes nature simply takes its course."
She had been in on it from the very beginning. She hadn't just been Julian's accomplice; she had been the architect of the entire medical conspiracy.
I reached for my phone, my fingers flying across the screen to dial Arthur Vance’s direct line.
"Arthur," I said the second the call connected. "I need you to pull every immigration, financial, and travel record on Dr. Evelyn Ross immediately. She isn't practicing in Zurich. She's still stateside under a corporate alias."
"Evelyn, calm down," Arthur’s voice came back, sharp and steady. "What did you find?"
"She didn't just help Julian cover up the clinical trials," I replied, staring at the glowing screen as the video continued to play. "She's the one who authorized the surgical override during my delivery. She’s the reason my son didn't survive."
There was a long, heavy pause on the other end of the line. When Arthur spoke again, his tone had shifted from professional caution to cold, tactical precision.

"I'm dispatching a unit to her last known address in Westchester right now," Arthur said. "Pack a bag, Evelyn. You're coming down to the secure safehouse until we lock her down."
"No, Arthur," I said, closing the laptop lid with a definitive snap. "I'm not running anymore. Tell your team to meet me at her clinic. We're ending this tonight."
