Chapter 6 - The Federal Interruption

The heavy swing of the double doors echoed through the boardroom like a gunshot, cutting Julian off mid-sentence and freezing every director in their seat.
Two armed federal marshals in dark tactical vests stepped into the room with practiced, deliberate strides. Flanking them was a tall, sharp-featured investigator whose gray suit and leather briefcase marked him as an agent of the state prosecutor’s economic crimes division.
Julian’s face went completely slack, the rage melting instantly into cold, hollow terror. He turned slowly away from the head of the table, his eyes darting toward the federal officers as if hoping they were heading for someone else.
"Julian Vale?" the lead investigator asked, stepping up to the mahogany table and pulling a crisp, blue-backed document from his portfolio.
"There's... there's been some kind of mistake," Julian stammered, his voice losing its arrogant edge, replaced by a frantic, high-pitched tremor. "I am the CEO of Vale Meridian. Whatever financial discrepancies your department is looking at, my accounting team can—"
"Mr. Vale, you are being served with a federal warrant of arrest," the investigator interrupted smoothly, cutting right through his excuse. "You are formally charged with corporate wire fraud, embezzlement of municipal development subsidies, and intentional falsification of tax disclosures over a four-year period."
A collective gasp rippled through the boardroom. Several directors instinctively pushed their chairs backward, distancing themselves from Julian as if his very presence was radioactive.
I stood frozen near the doorway, leaning slightly on Maya’s arm for physical support, watching the man who had controlled my life for five years finally unravel under the weight of his own crimes.
"Embezzlement?" Julian’s voice cracked as he backed up against the edge of the mahogany table, knocking a stack of quarterly reports onto the floor. "That's impossible! I never touched municipal funds! That was... that was routed through the secondary holding accounts!"
"Accounts that were registered under your personal social security number and signed with your biometric executive stamp," the investigator replied coldly, nodding to the marshals. "Cuff him."
Before Julian could scream or demand his lawyer, the federal marshals stepped forward. Cold steel clicked around his wrists, binding his hands behind the back of his bespoke charcoal suit.
As they dragged him past the table where he had ruled for years, Julian caught my eye. His face was twisted in a mask of betrayal and pure, unadulterated panic.
"Evelyn!" he shrieked, thrashing against the marshal's grip as they pulled him toward the double doors. "You planned this! You set me up with the feds! Don't let them take me—please, Evelyn, tell them it's a lie!"
I didn't blink. I didn't flinch. I looked at him with a cold, dead silence that hurt him far more than any words could have.
"Take him out," I said quietly.
May you like
The heavy doors slammed shut behind them, leaving the boardroom in a profound, suffocating silence.
