Chapter 5 - The Fall of an Empire

The silence in the boardroom was so profound that the hum of the overhead projector sounded like a roaring engine.
Julian stared at me, his mouth opening slightly as he tried to bridge the impossible gap between the quiet, compliant wife he had abandoned in the suburbs six days ago and the cold, unyielding woman standing before him now.
"Evelyn, let's... let's not do this here," Julian said, his voice dropping into a desperate, hushed tone as he stepped closer to me, attempting to place a hand on my arm. "I know you're upset about... about what happened. But bringing personal matters into the corporate office—this is madness. We can go home and talk about this."
I didn't flinch away from his touch, but the look in my eyes made him freeze mid-motion.
"Don't touch me," I whispered.
I pulled a crisp, folded legal document from my coat pocket and dropped it right onto the center of the mahogany table, directly in front of his empty chair.
"What is that?" Julian asked, his voice tightening with nervous apprehension.
"That is a certified copy of the family trust proxy revocation, filed and executed yesterday morning while you were drinking wine in Napa with your mistress," I said, my voice ringing out clearly across the entire room. "Furthermore, that is the emergency petition to freeze all corporate and personal assets linked to your name pending our divorce proceedings."
Julian’s breath hitched. He looked around the table at the board members, desperate for an ally. "You can't do this! The board will never vote to approve a hostile asset freeze! Thomas, tell her—tell her this is corporate suicide!"
Thomas Vance, the CFO, slowly lifted his head, looking up at Julian with profound disappointment. "I'm sorry, Julian. But fifty-two percent of the voting shares belong to Evelyn through the trust. She has absolute controlling majority. The board has already voted unanimously to recognize her as interim executive chair."
Julian staggered back a half-step, his hands gripping the edge of the mahogany table as the ground completely fell out from beneath him. "Unanimously? You all voted against me?"
"You abandoned your post, Julian," Arthur Vance said calmly, stepping forward to hand Julian a second, thicker envelope stamped with the seal of the state supreme court. "And as of nine o'clock this morning, you are officially locked out of every corporate account, subsidiary, and trust fund associated with Vale Meridian."
Julian snatched the envelope, his hands trembling violently as he ripped it open. The pages inside spelled out his absolute, total financial and professional ruin.
For a long moment, he stood motionless, staring down at the papers. Then, slowly, his head snapped up, his eyes wide and bloodshot, blazing with a desperate, cornered fury as he glared at me.

"You think you've destroyed me?" Julian snarled, his voice cracking with rage as he lunged forward toward the head of the table. "You're nothing without me! You were just a quiet little shadow hiding behind my success, and the moment I—"
Before Julian could finish his sentence, the heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open wide with a loud bang, and two armed federal marshals stepped into the room, flanked by an investigator from the state prosecutor's office.
