Chapter 27 - The Clean Slate

By dawn, the rain had stopped, leaving behind a crisp, washed-blue sky over New York City.
I sat at my desk on the thirty-fourth floor of Vale Meridian Tower, watching the sun rise over the Hudson River. The golden light spilled across the polished mahogany surface, catching the edges of the final legal documents Arthur Vance had placed before me an hour ago.
Dr. Evelyn Ross was currently in federal custody, joining Julian and Richard Thorne in the sprawling federal holding facility upstate. Her confession, recorded on the laboratory's master server before Arthur shut down the grid, was already on its way to the U.S. Attorney's office. There would be no plea deals for her. No early parole.
The corporate restructuring of Vale Meridian was officially finalized. With Thorne Bio-Research liquidated and its assets absorbed into our ethical medical division, our pediatric oncology trials were not only surviving—they were setting the global standard for genetic research.
My phone buzzed on the desk. It was an encrypted notification from the board secretary.
“The emergency shareholder meeting is scheduled for 10:00 AM. Unanimous vote to confirm your permanent appointment as Executive Chair and Chief Executive Officer.”
I stared at the screen, feeling a quiet, steady peace settling into my chest for the first time in months.
The ghost in the nursery was gone. The shadows that had haunted the hallways of my home and the offices of my company had been cleared away by sunlight and unyielding truth.
I stood up, walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, and looked out at the sprawling, beautiful city below.
I wasn't a victim anymore. I wasn't the grieving woman sitting on a cold hardwood floor, staring at a life stolen away by betrayal.

I was the architect of my own future.
And as I turned away from the glass to prepare for the board meeting, I knew that whatever battles lay ahead, Vale Meridian—and Evelyn Vale—were unbreakable.
