Chapter 3 - The Napa Sunrise

Five hundred miles away, the morning sun was just beginning to crest over the rolling green hills of Napa Valley, painting the sky in brilliant shades of amber and gold.

Inside the private, ultra-exclusive hillside villa rented on the corporate account, Julian Vale stepped out onto the teakwood balcony, a porcelain mug of black coffee in his hand. The air was crisp, smelling faintly of damp earth and blooming grapevines. He took a slow sip, enjoying the absolute quiet of the morning.

Beside him in the king-sized bed, Chloe Marr stirred, pulling the silk sheets up around her bare shoulders. She blinked sleepily, her blonde hair tangled across the pillows as she looked out toward the balcony.

"Julian?" she called out, her voice raspy with sleep. "What time is it?"

"Almost six," Julian replied without turning around, his eyes fixed on the distant horizon where a private helicopter was beginning its descent toward the estate's private helipad. "We need to pack soon, Chloe. My executive retreat keynote is in Chicago tomorrow morning, and I can't afford to look sluggish in front of the board."

Chloe let out a soft sigh, rolling out of bed and wrapping a designer robe around her waist before walking out onto the balcony to lean against his shoulder. "Do we really have to go back to the city yet? It's so quiet here. And honestly, Evelyn hasn't even called you in three days. She’s probably sitting at home sulking like she always does."

Julian chuckled, wrapping an arm around her waist and pressing a casual kiss to her temple. "Evelyn doesn't know how to make a fuss. She’s quiet, predictable, and entirely dependent on me. By the time we get back to the penthouse, I'll buy her some expensive jewelry, and she'll forget all about my little absence."

He truly believed that. He believed he was the center of my universe, the sun around which my entire existence orbited.

He didn't know that the universe had already collapsed.

A sharp rap at the glass bedroom door interrupted their morning intimacy.

Julian frowned, stepping back from the balcony. "Come in."

The heavy oak door pushed open, but it wasn't the resort concierge or room service. Standing in the doorway was Julian’s personal assistant, a young man named Marcus who had driven all night from the San Francisco airport just to deliver a package.

Marcus looked pale, his suit rumpled, holding a thick manila envelope like it was a ticking bomb.

"Marcus?" Julian’s brow furrowed in irritation. "What are you doing here? I told you not to disturb me unless the corporate headquarters was burning down."

"Mr. Vale," Marcus stammered, his voice shaking as he refused to meet Julian's eyes. "You need to look at this immediately. The corporate legal department just pushed an emergency notification through the executive portal five minutes ago."

Julian scoffed, setting his coffee mug down on the patio table. "What is it now? Another minor zoning dispute in Milwaukee?"

"No, sir," Marcus whispered, stepping forward and placing the manila envelope on the glass table. "Your wife... Mrs. Vale revoked your voting proxy yesterday afternoon. And... and there's been an incident at the Chicago residence."

Julian stopped dead in his tracks. The smug, confident smirk slid off his face, replaced by a sudden, dangerous frown. "Revoked my proxy? That's impossible. Evelyn doesn't even know how to access the trust portal without my authorization."

"She didn't need your authorization, sir," Marcus swallowed hard. "She’s the sole trustee. And... and according to the hospital report attached to the divorce filing... Mrs. Vale lost the baby while you were here."

The balcony grew dead silent. The wind rustled the grapevines below, but inside the room, time seemed to grind to a violent, sickening halt.
