Chapter 41 - The Echoes of Geneva

The morning after Thomas Vance's arrest, the global financial markets reacted with a ferocity that caught even our most seasoned analysts off guard. Vale Meridian stock didn't just rebound; it surged by fourteen percent within the first twenty minutes of trading bell. Wall Street loved resilience, and our swift, surgical neutralization of the internal breach sent a clear message to institutional investors: the company was no longer vulnerable to corporate espionage.

I sat behind my mahogany desk on the thirty-fourth floor, reviewing the morning ticker tape, when the private intercom buzzed. It was Sarah Lin, her voice unusually tight.

"Madam Chair, you have an unannounced priority call on line four from Geneva. It’s Ambassador Laurent from the World Health Organization’s ethical oversight committee. He says it’s regarding the Azores facility data we recovered."

I pressed the flashing amber button, routing the secure audio through the desktop speakers. "Ambassador Laurent. Good morning."

"Good morning, Dr. Vale," a deep, accented voice came through the speakers, carrying the formal weight of international diplomacy. "We have spent the last forty-eight hours decrypting the black-box telemetry your security director handed over to Interpol. What Dr. Evelyn Ross and Thorne Bio-Research were attempting in that offshore installation goes far beyond corporate espionage. It touches international bio-ethical conventions."

I leaned forward, resting my elbows on the polished wood. "My team and I secured the facility, purged the rogue AI, and handed the primary perpetrators over to federal custody. Vale Meridian is the victim here, Ambassador."

"Formally, yes," Laurent replied carefully. "However, the institutional infrastructure of the Azores site was tied to an international consortium grant funded in part by European health ministries. The committee is convening an emergency tribunal in Geneva next week, and they require your personal testimony to officially clear Vale Meridian of any complicity."

"A tribunal," I repeated, a bitter taste rising in my mouth. "They want a public spectacle."

"They want transparency, Dr. Vale," Laurent said softly. "And given your position as the global leader in pediatric biotech, your presence is non-negotiable. If you do not attend, the committee will freeze our European clinical trial licenses pending a multi-year audit."

The trap was subtle, but the pressure was absolute. They weren't accusing us of wrongdoing; they were leveraging our success to force us onto the international stage, exposing us to political crossfire.

"Confirm my attendance for next Tuesday, Sarah," I said into the room before disconnecting the line. I looked out at the New York skyline, realizing that local victories were only small battles in a much larger, global war.
