Chapter 39 - Checkmate on Floor Thirty-Four

The rooftop doors burst open as Arthur and I sprinted out of the stairwell onto the thirty-fourth floor.

The executive suite was dark, save for the green glow of computer monitors lining the master workstation. Thomas Vance sat at my desk, his fingers clacking furiously against the keyboard, beads of sweat glistening on his forehead as he stared at the final authorization progress bar: 94%... 95%... 96%...

"Thomas," I said, my voice cutting through the quiet room like a scalpel.

He froze, his fingers hovering over the keys. Slowly, he turned around in the leather executive chair, a desperate, manic smile twisting his features.

"Evelyn," he laughed breathlessly. "You should have stayed in the Atlantic. You can't stop the transfer. The packet is already propagating through international nodes. In ten seconds, Vale Meridian is a hollow shell."

"You forgot one fundamental rule of corporate architecture, Thomas," I said, walking slowly toward the desk, my heels clicking sharply against the polished mahogany floor.

"And what's that?" he sneered.

"The person who built the foundation always holds the master kill switch."

Arthur stepped forward swiftly, slamming a physical hardware key into the secondary lockout port beneath the main console and twisting it counter-clockwise.

SYSTEM HALTED. DATA TRANSFER ABORTED.

The progress bar locked instantly at 99%, before crashing into a stark red error screen. Thomas sprang out of the chair, lunging toward the terminal, but Arthur intercepted him with a swift, clean takedown, pinning him face-down against the carpet before slapping tactical cuffs onto his wrists.

The room fell silent, save for the hum of the cooling fans.

I looked down at the terminal screen. The transfer was blocked. The firewall was re-secured. The threat was neutralized.
