Chapter 17 - A Different Kind of Evidence

Sarah met me in a bright coffee shop near Borough Hall, where every table was occupied by someone speaking into a laptop. She wore a green raincoat and looked as though she hadn't slept.
“I need to be clear,” she said before sitting. “I gave you those files because I thought you'd need proof Adrian had concealed Leo. I didn't understand how many other people were in that archive.”
“I didn't publish anything.”
“I know. That's why I'm here.”
Sarah had been a compliance analyst at Moretti Capital. She'd reported inconsistencies in the July trust restructuring and been told to focus on the public-offering checklist. Her access was revoked the morning she resigned, but the copied files were still on an encrypted work device she had used during the review.
“Did you take the archive lawfully?” I asked.
“I honestly don't know what a judge would say,” she answered. “I don't want you carrying that risk for me.”
I told her Miriam was arranging independent advice and a preservation process. Sarah seemed relieved not to be asked to play spy.
As she stood, she slid a yellow sticky note across the table. On it was one file name: TRIBECA_BOARD_MODEL_FINAL2.

“That's the spreadsheet everyone keeps talking about,” she said. “The numbers aren't the most interesting thing. Look at who changed the assumptions.”
I folded the note but didn't open a computer. This time, evidence would go through people who knew how to handle it.
