Chapter 35 - A Copy of the Trust

Noah Pierce obtained the controlling trust instrument through authorized channels and sent a short summary to the lawyers, not to the entire Moretti executive staff.

Trust B held assets intended for Leo's care and future. Adrian was primary trustee. Vanessa was secondary co-trustee on specified actions. A deadlock provision allowed a neutral trust protector to recommend an independent successor, subject to the instrument and judicial supervision where required.

“Why didn't Adrian just ask the protector?” I asked.

“He did,” Noah said. “The protector is an elderly retired fiduciary who has been abroad. There are deadlines, notice periods, and questions about whether the disputed transaction actually requires Vanessa's approval.”

I could hear Adrian's frustration through the speaker. “My nephew needs stable management now.”

“Your nephew has stable caregivers,” Noah answered. “The trust needs lawful management. They are related questions, not identical ones.”

For a moment I expected Adrian to explode. Instead he asked for a written explanation of which expenses could continue while the signatures were disputed.

Noah promised one.

I underlined a sentence in my notes: A child's dinner should not depend on a contested board vote.
