Chapter 57 - The Visitor From London

Vanessa returned to New York with two lawyers and three suitcases, none of which belonged in a criminal evidence photograph despite the rumors. Her counsel said she was cooperating with inquiries about the leaked model.

Adrian arranged a separate conference room for the trust discussions. I attended only the first portion, at Noah's request, to answer factual questions about what I had heard at the Plaza.

Vanessa looked less untouchable without a podium. She apologized again for mentioning my pregnancy publicly. This time she did not explain it away.

“Thank you,” I said. “Please don't do it again.”

Adrian supplied his corrected statement about our divorce. Vanessa read it and said, “Then at least we can stop building claims on that.”

I left before the financial discussion began. In the lobby I saw a young man in a delivery uniform studying directions on his phone. He looked up at the polished marble staircase and hesitated, uncertain which door he was allowed to use.

I pointed him toward reception. I had spent too many years in buildings designed to make ordinary people feel they were trespassing.
