Chapter 28 - A Room Without a Camera

A week later Adrian asked to meet me somewhere private. I chose a public garden courtyard near the courthouse, empty except for two older men arguing about chess.

He arrived with no driver within sight. The absence of security didn't make him harmless, but at least it kept the conversation from feeling staged.

“I've hired a separate lawyer for the Leo matter,” he told me. “Someone who doesn't work for Moretti Capital.”

“That should have happened years ago.”

“I know.” He studied the wet leaves caught beneath a bench. “Would you consider meeting him?”

“For what?”

“He wants to understand whether you were pressured at the Plaza.”

“I was. By you.”

Adrian looked at me. “Then tell him that.”

I hadn't expected permission to tell a lawyer something damaging about the man paying him. Yet the honest answer was obvious: I didn't need Adrian's permission at all.

We sat without speaking for a minute. A child on the sidewalk beyond the gate bounced a ball against a wall, each impact echoing through the courtyard.

“I'm not coming back to 740 Park,” I said.

“I didn't ask.”

“Not today,” I corrected him.

“No,” Adrian said. “Not today.”
