Chapter 74 - The Baby's First Name

Elena tried to make a list of baby names, but every suggestion reminded her of somebody terrible from college. We abandoned the exercise after she rejected three perfectly respectable names as belonging to “men who borrowed money and never returned Tupperware.”

“Have you discussed names with Adrian?” she asked.

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because I want to know what I like before I hear what the Moretti family has traditionally used.”

She nodded. “A remarkably sensible precaution.”

I wrote a few names in my sketchbook, then crossed them out. Underneath I wrote No child should arrive carrying a job description.

Adrian called later with a question about whether I wanted him at the anatomy scan. It was the first time he had asked instead of announcing.

“I'll think about it,” I said.

“Okay.”

“Really okay?”

May you like

“Yes, Claire. You don't have to decide tonight.”

I hung up and stared at my phone, wary of how much relief such a simple answer could bring.
