Chapter 41 - The Appointment Nobody Canceled

Adrian missed a scheduled corporate dinner to attend Leo's pediatric appointment in Vermont. He told me afterward because he seemed surprised by his own choice.

“Dorothy would have gone,” he said.

“Of course she would.”

“But the doctor asked about family history. I knew some answers she didn't.”

He told me Leo was growing well and that the pediatrician recommended an ordinary sleep routine. No luxury wellness package. No security consultant. Just an earlier bedtime and less disruption.

“What did Leo say when you arrived?” I asked.

“He said, 'You came again.'”

I let that sit between us.

Then Adrian asked about my next prenatal appointment. I gave him the date and offered a basic medical update afterward, not access to the clinic or permission to attend without invitation.

He accepted it.

The call ended after eight minutes. I returned to my drawing and thought about how much effort we'd wasted trying to make family into a single, beautiful institution. Maybe it was simply a sequence of ordinary promises kept.
