Chapter 33 - Two Elenas

Dorothy once mentioned “Elena's old room,” and my best friend immediately straightened when I repeated it.

“Not me, I hope,” Elena joked. “I can barely keep my own apartment in order.”

“Elena Moretti,” I said. “Adrian's sister. Leo's mother.”

We both fell quiet. The shared name had confused more than one hurried conversation, and the consequences of confusion in this family were rarely small.

I asked Dorothy to tell me more about the woman who had owned the green-shuttered house before her death. Not the corporate biography, the sister Adrian praised at charity galas, but the person Leo might remember.

“She labeled every seedling,” Dorothy said. “She sang terribly. She kept a notebook of children's stories because she was afraid she'd forget them. And she had very little patience for people who treated her son like a future chairman.”

It was the first time Elena Moretti had felt like more than a tragic entry in the trust instrument.

My friend stirred her coffee. “Maybe Leo needs people to talk about his mother as a person. Not a dynasty.”

I wrote that down. Adrian needed to hear it. More importantly, Leo needed adults who could say her name without turning it into a financial category.
